We discuss whether there will be a Season 2 of the Netflix series First Love and the show’s renewed or canceled status.
First Love is a sprawling new Netflix romance spanning a couple of decades and nine episodes. Despite not exactly being an ideal binge-watch proposition, the solidly-constructed drama will no doubt amass a coterie of fans, perhaps due to the show being inspired by, of all things, two songs by Hikaru Utada – “First Love” and “Hatsukoi”. It might be longwinded, but it’s also a likeable and often emotional story. But what about a second season?
Will there be a First Love Season 2? Renewed or canceled status

Netflix haven’t officially confirmed the show’s future one way or the other, which isn’t unusual, but information about the show seems to be really thin on the ground in any case. There aren’t too many marketing dollars behind this, and it’ll likely only get real traction within enthusiast circles — those really devoted to the genre or to Japanese filmmaking and the cast.
That definitely limits the upside of First Love, which Netflix are sure to be mindful of. It’s unlikely to generate widespread mainstream appeal, which is probably why it wasn’t heavily advertised in the first place. It also tells a fairly complete — if overlong — story primarily focused on two characters.
With all the above in mind, we predict that First Love will not be renewed for Season 2.
What is First Love about?
Here’s the official synopsis courtesy of AsianWiki:
A man and a woman retrace their memory of an unforgettable first love. They first met in the 1990’s and grew up together in the 2000’s.
Yae Noguchi (Hikari Mitsushima) wants to become a flight attendant, but she has an accident. Harumichi Namiki (Takeru Satoh) becomes a pilot for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. He quits being a pilot and goes the other way.
Who might be in the cast of First Love Season 2?
The first season primarily revolves around two characters who are played by different actors at different ages:
- Hikari Mitsushima – Yae Noguchi
- Takeru Satoh – Harumichi Namiki
- Rikako Yagi – Yae Noguchi (young)
- Taisei Kido – Harumichi Namiki (young)
If a second season were to continue the same story it’d likely bring these four back. However, the likeliest option is that a second season, were one to be commissioned, would be a completely new story, perhaps inspired by more of Utada’s songs.
