We discuss whether there will be a season 2 of the Netflix K-Drama series Under the Queen’s Umbrella and its renewed or cancelled status.
A gripping historical drama, Under the Queen’s Umbrella showcases the cynical, occasionally downright brutal side to a palace in constant conflict with itself. With far more to unpack than just good vs evil (there are plenty of murky characters with changing intentions here, and even some of the villainous actions are justifiable at times), there’s always something substantial going on. Packed with exciting twists, genuinely unpredictable revelations, and welcome dashes of humour, this is a show deserving of any praise it gets.
Season one of Under the Queen’s Umbrella premiered on Netflix on October 15, 2022, and will have aired for 16 episodes by the end of its run. Here at Ready Steady Cut, we gave the first season a 4/5 rating, stating that it swiftly settled into a comfortable groove and makes the most of its palace setting. We also drew attention to Kim Hye-soo’s fantastic acting performance, stating:
”Kim Hye-soo stands out as Queen Hwa-ryeong, topping off her performance with a typically nuanced exhibition of raw emotional resonance. Able to pull off a multifaceted depiction that flits between desperation, desire, and poise (and more), Kim provides the character she plays with an abundance of layers, all of which are easily translated to the viewer.”
Will there be a season 2 of the Netflix K-Drama series Under the Queen’s Umbrella – renewed or cancelled status
Status: TBC/not renewed yet
As of right now, Under the Queen’s Umbrella has not been renewed for season two. This is understandable, though. For one, K-Dramas still mostly favour a one-series format, and narratives are often purposefully contained inside the allotted number of episodes afforded with no real wiggle room for more instalments. This looks to be the case here, too, with the myriad of storylines ranging from impending rebellion to murder investigation all reaching their fever pitch ahead of the finale in a way that will most likely see things neatly wrapped up. Any further seasons would risk tarnishing the carefully thought-out process here, so it’s a wise move to keep things how they are.
Still, you can never fully rule out the return of Under the Queen’s Umbrella for a second season. It has been a highly popular drama, and thanks to the massive ensemble, there are other characters who could find their lives chronicled next time instead. That, and should things resolve in a way favouring the show’s protagonists, there will always be room to return to a world where Crown Prince Seongnam has taken the throne, showing us how the palace progressed under his rule as time went by.
However, that’s all just our theorising, and we’d still say it’s a safe bet that Under the Queen’s Umbrella will end its run on Sunday, December 4th. So, it’s best to get prepared ahead of what looks to be a gripping, ambitious finale.
