Summary

Even in an episode filled with despair and uncertainty, Dungeon delivers another gripping installment viewers won’t be able to tear their eyes away from.

We recap the HiDive anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 13, “Morgue: Victim,” which contains spoilers.

Last week’s episode ended with fan’s not knowing what awaited Bell (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) or his party. While fans probably hoped things would begin looking up for them soon, this episode shows us a dark reality, as everything that can go wrong eventually does. Despite how bleak things seem, it’s more than worth tuning into week after week as the show’s storytelling capabilities only grow stronger and more polished with time.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 13 Recap

The episode opens with Tsubaki Collbrande trying to forge a sword when her hammer breaks. It’s a sign of a bad omen, she says as the god, Miach, and his familia captain, Naaza Erisuis, walk in, requesting her assistance in the dungeon.

Down on the 37th floor, Bell struggles to drag him and Ryuu down a tunnel when the Juggernaut appears behind them. He attempts to put some distance between them by shooting a fire bolt at the ceiling, and it’s enough to put a barrier of rocks between them, buying them some time. Just then, Ryuu wakes up, and Bell is able to explain their situation. He begs her to heal herself, and in turn, she begs Bell to leave her behind and allow her to heal him instead. Before they can decide, a skull sheep appears in their tunnel.

Luvis and Dormul learn that the Hestia Familia have been stranded in the dungeon. Despite their injuries, they feel compelled to save them until the Hephaistos Familia appears, looking for information on what happened to Bell and his party. After hearing about the situation, they decide to explore the 25th floor to look for Bell’s friends.

Bell grabs his knife, preparing to take on the skull sheep. Immediately things take a turn for the worst when he learns the skull sheep is significantly faster than expected and has the ability to camouflage. The monster lands several devastating blows on Bell, locking his arm in his jaw until Bell finally stabs him in the neck, killing him. Again, Ryuu asks Bell to leave her, as she is dead weight. He adamantly refuses, screaming that he needs her, as she has experience with the lower floors, and he would quickly die without her. She then decides that she’s been too hasty and suggests they find a room in the cave to regain their composure and regroup.

Bell’s party continues to fight the Amphisbaena on the 27th floor. With a barrage of attacks, they weaken him, but then the monster launches itself from the waterfall, creating massive waves to throw the party off.

Ending Explained

Bell and Ryuu continue searching the lower floor for a safe room to hide in. They see a light at the end of the tunnel they think belongs to an adventurer who can help them, only to find the person long dead. Just when Bell feels like the is no hope, 3 skull sheep appear in the shadows. He begins assaulting them with fire bolts, knocking a pile of rocks on top of them. Despite being safe for the moment, Bell begins to panic, wondering if this is where they will die. Ryuu tries to assure him but ends up slapping Bell out of it when he begins to give up. With his mind clear, she tells Bell to try and get a few minutes of sleep to recuperate as much as possible.

On the 27th floor, Bell’s party struggles to recover from the Amphisbaena attack. They realize Mikoto has not resurfaced after disappearing under the water. The monster attacks again as Cassandra looks on in despair at her vision coming true. She’s too afraid to move as a blast of fire comes blazing in her direction, but Sanjouno pushes her out of the way, taking the hit instead. The episode ends with the group launching themselves at Amphisbaena in retaliation.

Despite how stressful it was, this turned out to be another exciting episode. It seems not even the story and animation have stepped up, but the voice acting as well. It’s hard not to feel for these characters when the actors behind them put so much emotion into every performance.

Every episode brings more cliffhangers I can’t wait to get through. At times it feels like there are a lot of characters to try and keep up with, but so far, they’ve all seemed to serve a purpose eventually. I’m curious to see what the Hephaistos Familia will contribute and if it will be enough to save Bell and his friends.
