We recap the HiDive anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 14, “Daphne Lauros: Friend,” which contains spoilers.

Just when it seems like things can’t get any worse for Bell (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) and his party, something even more heartbreaking happens that seems to take away all hope. While these major setbacks haven’t ruined their will to fight just yet, with Bell’s party losing members in battle, things aren’t exactly looking good for the group either. Even with help on the way, whether or not Bell will make it long enough to be saved remains to be seen. So far, this season has been just as stressful as it has been entertaining, but knowing Bell, they will surely find a way out of it.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 14 Recap

The episode opens with a brief flashback to when Ryuu first met her old familiar member, Alise, before returning to Ryuu and Bell on the 37th floor of the Dungeon. She’s assessing their chances of survival as the dungeon walls slowly begin to repair themselves. Just then, three Skull Sheep appear in their safe room. Despite her injuries, Ryuu manages to take two but struggles on the last one. Luckily, Bell awakens just in time to kill it. As he tries to hand her a knife to defend herself, Ryuu apologizes, saying she thinks she’s reached her limit. As she closes her eyes, she begins to reminisce about her time in the Astrea Familia.

Back on the higher floors, Bell’s party is giving their all against the Amphisbaena after watching it attack Sanjouno. In a cloud of crimson mist, the monster disappears into the water, confusing the team. After several moments of confusion, Amphisbaena emerges from under a sheet of ice, creating massive waves and launching Ouka through the air and onto his back. When he stands again, Ouka runs toward the monster, instructing Welf to use his magic as he prepares to attack.

Under the water’s surface, Mikoto struggles to regain her strength as several fish nip at her body. As she watches Ouka run, she recites a spell for him, releasing it and temporarily subduing Amphisbaena. The rest of the party is happy to see she is alive, just as Sanjouno emerges from the distance, revealing that she, too, is okay. As she activates her leveling-up ability on Aisha, Ouka swings his hammer down on Amphisbaena, chopping off one of its two heads. With her newfound strength, Aisha is able to finish off the monster with one final swing.

With Amphisbaena finally dead, the group is able to tend to those who were wounded. Although they’re pleased over their victory and new items, they are still not out of the woods when the dungeon roof suddenly begins crumbling. They see other parties running and decide it would be best to follow them up to a higher floor, but Lili reminds them Bell is still down on the lower floors.

With so many injured members, the team wonders if this is the smartest move. They consider leaving to regroup, but Cassandra tells them they must push on, according to her earlier vision. At the mention of her powers, Daphne yells at her and insists they head up instead of deeper into the tunnel. Still, Cassandra stands firm, grabbing Daphne’s hands and begging her to listen. Just then, a giant crystal falls from the ceiling, almost killing Cassandra. While Daphne still seems to think her idea is foolish, she then agrees to trust Cassandra and follow her lead, prompting everyone to follow them deeper into the Dungeon.

Ending Explained

The Dungeon’s ceiling begins to collapse more as the group runs, eventually blocking their only way back. They realize if they had tried to reach the higher floors, the collapse likely would’ve killed them, as they thank Cassandra for saving their lives. Now that they are safe, their next goal is to find and save Bell. Meanwhile, on the 37th floor, Bell looks around worriedly as Ryuu takes a moment to rest.

Once again, this series gives viewers a solid episode with plenty of action, drama, and suspense. It was awesome to see Bell’s party get a win without sacrificing any members, but considering there’s still more than half the season left, that doesn’t mean things couldn’t change. This season carries far more weight than the previous ones, with the character’s choices and actions feeling far more crucial than ever before. For once, it feels like there are real consequences, and as a viewer, that helps us feel invested in the story.
