1. Twin Peaks (1990)

When you have a town full of secrets in your premise, and a murder mystery at the heart of the story, it is hard not to think of Mark Frost and David Lynch and Twin Peaks. The show has left its mark on popular culture forever, and who killed Laura Palmer was the question on everyone’s lips in the early 1990s. Plagued with controversy and studio interference, the show broke new ground, mixing soap opera drama with supernatural horror, it is simply one of the finest TV shows ever produced, and fans of Woman of the Dead should check it out.

Kate Winslet is exceptional as a detective in another small mid-American town, investigating a murder while spinning the plates of her tangled personal life. With a no-nonsense look at life in this working-class environment, the show was critically applauded and at seven episodes this is a great binge-watch.

3. Broadchurch (2013-2017)

Here is a rare British entry on the list, starring ex, and somehow still present, Doctor Who David Tennant and Olivia Colman. 5. The Outsider (2020)

The murder of a young boy sparks an investigation in this supernatural thriller starring Jason Bateman. Once again, the setting of the show parallels Woman of the Dead, with its exploration of small-town life, and the characters and secrets it uncovers. Possibly more Twin Peaks-inspired, though, The Outsider does veer into the more supernatural elements, but there are similar themes through both shows making it a must-see for our recommendations. The show was based on a Stephen King novel, and although a second season looked promising, it still has not materialized.

6. Bordertown (2016-2020)

Stylistically, this story of detective Kari Sorjonen moving to a small town and investigating the crimes there has a similar feel and look to Woman of the Dead. Tone-wise, this show is part of what we have come to know as Nordic Noir, and the three seasons that are available now are worth a look.

We had to include this on our list, as it may not be on the radar for many crime drama fans, but this fan-favorite UK show has a huge following and has just completed another run on the BBC. Written and created by Sally Wainwright, the show follows the story of Catherine Cawood, a policewoman in the troubled setting of the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, played by Sarah Lancashire, as she deals with her own tragic past while trying to solve kidnappings and murders along the way.
