“Mesmerized” delivers all the action and plot swerves that any good penultimate episode needs, setting up an exciting first season finale.

This recap of the Netflix series Lockwood and Co Season 1 Episode 7, “Mesmerized”, contains spoilers.

The title of this penultimate episode, “Mesmerized”, refers to a state of mind. It also tees up a plot twist, though admittedly one that should have been obvious to the audience for at least an episode. It involves George and the magic mirror everyone’s after, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Lockwood and Co Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

First, let’s get the admin out of the way. Lucy and Anthony are able to escape the Fittes Academy after their misadventures in Episode 6 and make off in a taxi with Mary Dulac’s book in tow. While they explicitly mention the fact that Penelope was given a box by the Golden Blade containing the same mysterious harp symbol found on Fairfax’s goggles, the pressing matter now that they have the book is retrieving the bone glass. Its location isn’t exactly a closely-guarded secret, but actually retrieving it is another matter entirely.

The auction

This involves Lucy and Anthony sneaking into a black market auction that Winkman is holding to try and sell the bone glass mirror. As if this wasn’t perilous enough they quickly discover that there’s already a DEPRAC agent undercover inside and that continuing the mission may well blow his cover. Once again, Anthony’s stubbornness and short-sighted approach — he’s unwilling to leave when given the opportunity — prove to be a major problem for everyone.

While this is going on, George and Flo wait outside on a little boat in order to facilitate an escape attempt. This seems like a good opportunity to develop the romance between the two but, again… well, it’s complicated.

Anthony and Lucy manage to get into the auction and cause enough carnage to buy themselves time to steal it, but their escape attempt results in the death of the undercover DEPRAC agent, since Anthony looks at him a little too long, blowing his cover. He sacrifices himself so the kids can escape, getting hacked to pieces in the process by Winkman’s goons.

Why is George mesmerized?

Outside, things have a weird tone. George is getting aggressive and paranoid about Flo and her intentions. Admittedly, she keeps suggesting they move the boat elsewhere, and perhaps even find time for a little job while they’re waiting, which suggests that she isn’t necessarily trustworthy or reliable for the escape. But it turns out she’s trying to keep George away from the mirror. She has recognized that George has become mesmerized by it. He looks physically weakened, and he’s showing all kinds of tell-tale warning signs in his personality. The bone glass has a way of ensnaring people psychologically, and George has become susceptible to it.

This does indeed complicate the escape, but then again that was becoming pretty complicated anyway since on their way out, Lucy and Anthony run into the Golden Blade again. Now, I must admit that his confession that he had already told Winkman about the undercover agent seems to only exist in order to absolve Anthony of his responsibility for getting the guy killed, but I suppose that’s understandable in a teen drama. If nothing else, it justifies another fun fight on the rooftops as Lucy and Anthony try to escape with the mirror.

The ending

Eventually, Lucy and Anthony have no choice but to throw the bone glass down from the roof into the Thames below, where it lands in a silver shroud. It’s a bit of an implausible toss, but let’s not quibble about that. With its power dampened by the shroud, Flo and George take it to DEPRAC while Anthony and Lucy jump off the building.

However, in a last-minute twist, George can’t bring himself to take the mirror inside. Instead, he cradles it and heads to a nearby phone box, where he makes a call and tells the person on the other end of the line, “I’ve got it.” I think we all know who he’s talking to.
