We discuss whether there will be a season 2 of the Netflix series Freeridge and its renewed or cancelled status.

I’m not sure I’ve ever watched a comedy as awful with its mean-spiritedness as Freeridge. While mildly funny, the show’s characters are so overtly cruel to each other that you cannot care about any of them. The worst part is that On My Block co-creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft attempt to beard this type of unpleasantness with a kind of progressiveness embraced by audiences today that should be celebrated. Instead, we are saddled with a coming-of-age comedy with redeeming characters. This is a comedy that cannot get out of its own way.

Will there be a season 2 of the Netflix series Freeridge – renewed or cancelled status

At this moment in time, Netflix has not confirmed whether or not Freeridge has been renewed for a Season 2.

There was a fair amount of buzz built around Freeridge before streaming on Netflix. For one, the show is a spinoff of On My Block, a Netflix comedy series set in the community of Freeridge. That show, brought to you by On My Block’s co-creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft, is back together to bring the supernatural comedy on screen.

While the original source material was male-driven, this young adult show is female-led. Starring Gloria (Abbott Elementary’s Keyla Mejia) and Ines (Team Kaylies Bryana Salaz), the show has a built-in audience. This is no small feat with the Netflix series. The original source sitcom ran on the streaming giant’s waves for four seasons. Remarkable when you consider the average original Netflix series lasts only two.

While my main complaint about the series, as you read above, is how awful the characters treat each other. A problem is when they offer no redemption or avenue to redeem themselves. This was the main complaint of the show Arrested Development. That’s an argument I never liked about that series of cancellations. For one, a show like Everybody Loves Raymond used that exact same premise of family dysfunction.

The difference here is those shows were exceptionally funny, groundbreaking, and considered classic. The series also fails to deal with what made the first groundbreaking in its own right. The series is progressive. The writers bring to the forefront LGBTQ+ issues, while the entire cast is young people of a specific community. However, none of the themes and issues important to the Mexican-American family are approached. That isn’t very reassuring considering 30% of the Los Angeles population comes from the community.

However, considering the relatively low cost of producing the show, with virtually no star power and a built-in younger audience, we here at Ready Steady Cut can easily see Freeridge getting an additional season. And with the show ending on a cliffhanger, with many storylines still open (like Javier’s health and if Marisol’s avoided a fatal injury), the solid performing universe of On My Block should result in an additional season.

Also, an opportunity to right some wrongs and make some improvements.
