Is the Netflix movie Your Place or Mine based on a True Story?  We discuss the Rom-Com Netflix movie and whether it is based on real events.

Your Place or Mine is the anticipated romantic comedy film starring rom-com alumni actors Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon. These two cute actors have previously hit our screens with Just Married, What Happened in Vegas, and This Means War, Just Like Heaven.

While both actors are well known for this genre, this is the first time they’ve been paired up, so this film has great promise to be the much-needed fun-loving film for 2023, right in time for Valentine’s Day too.

The story surrounds Debbie and Peter, who are best friends and complete opposites. Debbie has a set routine with her son in Los Angeles, but Peter thrives on change and the wild, fast life in New York. When they swap houses and lives for a week, they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.

Written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna, Your Place or Mine is her directorial debut. The film stars Reese Witherspoon (who also produced) and Ashton Kutcher as well as Jesse Williams, Zoë Chao, Wesley Kimmel, Tig Notaro, and Steve Zahn.

Filmed in Brooklyn, we have the busy streets and beautiful skylines of New York City, which has been a popular location for filming in the past.

Is the Netflix movie Your Place or Mine based on a True Story?

This is a heavy question out there, and whether or not the film is based on a book. Witherspoon is known for having a keen eye for adapting novels featured in her famed book club.

However, this film is not based on a true story or book. In fact, Your Place or Mine is a new original screenplay from writer/director Aline Brosh McKenna. There are a few books out there named Your Place or Mine, but they are not the inspiration for the movie.

What is Your Place or Mine About?

This film is about two friends who live far apart, so you’ll notice a theme of Face Timing, something many of us can relate to with friends and families living in different cities and even countries. These two have been best friends for over twenty years, despite being total opposites in character. Witherspoon’s character, Debbie, decides to leave town to pursue a lifelong dream, and Kutcher’s character, Peter, offers to help care for her teenage son. The best friends swap houses for one life-changing week.

During this week, they learn that their twenty-year friendship hasn’t been completely honest. They discover that what they think they want might not be what they really need.

This film promises comfortable familiarity by using classic tropes of swapping lives/locations, this film follows the likes of The Holiday, The Change-up, and Freaky Friday, in all of which our protagonists learn and grow while being in someone else’s shoes.

If the classic film When Harry Met Sally has taught us anything, it is that men and women cannot be just friends, so will these two end up together? More than likely, but we shall see. Make sure to let us know what you think of the film.
