Guitarist Graham (Will Harrison) was rejected by keyboardist Karen (Suki Waterhouse), and of course, lead singers Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy (Sam Claflin) had their chaotic disagreements. In “Track 5: Fire”, these two separate love-hate relationships evolve somewhat, taking the band into new, unpredictable territory.

Daisy Jones and the Six Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

The fifth episode opens outside of the famous Sound City studios. The band gathers inside the recording studio to work on their debut album. Daisy brings twenty songs to the table, while Billy and The Six have about 13 to play with. Billy wants to focus on his band’s songs, while Daisy wants to try her new lyrics. She teases Billy, saying he only writes sappy love songs about his wife. She wants everyone to have input and collaborate on new music together. This inspires the other band members to speak up about their desires. They want to use new sounds, styles, and concepts, but Billy thinks it’s all a bad idea.

How does Teddy solve the band’s disagreements?

Music producer and, to be honest, the only real, mature adult in the room, Teddy Price, orders Billy and Daisy to go off somewhere to write a new song together alone, to solve the band’s disagreements once and for all.

Billy drives Daisy to a diner for some breakfast, but they even argue over choosing the right radio station on the way there. At the restaurant, Billy sings along to a song called ‘Stumbled on Sublime,’ which plays on the radio, a song he adores. It happens to be the very one that was stolen from Daisy. She admits it is her song, giving her some kudos in the relationship.

They break into Teddy’s expensive home and get to work on a new song together. It is clear that they have completely different ideas and writing processes. Daisy’s lyrics focus on nature and poetic imagery, while Billy wants to be more simplistic and obvious with his love songs. They analyze and critique each other’s lyrics. Billy starts to play one of Graham’s riffs, and Daisy swims to clear her head. Later, they sing and dance to music together, hinting at the start of a love affair. It’s awkward, the singers opening up to one another about their love of music and their darkest secrets.

How do Billy and Daisy become friends?

Daisy opens up about her pill addiction and distant parents. Billy finds common ground with the addiction and parenting problems. They start to bond, slowly starting to become friends. Daisy realizes that Billy writes about what he wants to be, but instead, they should write about their flaws and faults. They start to click, noticing how much they have in common with one another. Billy disagrees over one particular piece of the song, though, and calls Daisy broken. She runs off, upset by the comment. He apologizes and opens up about his own father leaving the family. As they make amends, Teddy returns home.

The secondary storyline of this episode focuses on the rocky relationship between Graham and Karen. She turned him down at Camila’s party, and Graham started to date Caroline instead. The trio goes to the beach while Billy and Daisy work on a new song elsewhere. Karen gets to know Caroline and realizes she isn’t the right fit for Graham. She gets inside Graham’s head and manipulates him into seeing his differences with Caroline as faults.

How does Karen win Graham back?

After a day of surfing and sunbathing, the trio returns home. Karen asks Graham to escort her into her house in case there is an intruder lurking inside. Graham walks her in, and Karen jumps on the guitarist. They passionately make out while Caroline waits outside, unaware of the ensuing affair.

The couple is nearly caught by Eddie and Warren though, who have been to the movies all day. Teddy calls; they are all needed back in the studio.
