Summary
There are some surprisingly sweet moments and many earth-shattering revelations in “Ni Weh Sesh (I Have No Heart).” Of course, there are still plenty of cliched romances and corny one-liners to even out all the positives.
We recap the Netflix series Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 6, “Ni Weh Sesh (I Have No Heart),” which contains spoilers.
In Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 5, we left the Crows and Tolya (Lewis Tan) trapped in a poisonous gas chamber as they hunted for the legendary sword Neshyenyer. “Ni Weh Sesh (I Have No Heart)” picks up just where we left them. The Crows continue to battle for this vital weapon. Alina (Jessie Mei Li) rides to Morozova’s workshop with Mal (Archie Renaux) and Baghra (Zoë Wanamaker) as they hunt for the Firebird, and Kirigan (Ben Barnes) hits Alina where it hurts.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 6 Recap
We begin with the trio heading to Morozova’s workshop. They discuss Alina’s plan to kill Kirigan, which means collecting the Firebird and the Neshyenyer sword. Alina wants to raise an army made entirely of light, the opposite of Kirigan’s shadow army, but Baghra warns her not to mess with dark magic, as the side effects would be far too pricey. Alina then mentions the Cut, the ability to telekinetically bisect an object. Again, Baghra speaks against it, as this power takes lots of practice. Baghra doesn’t think they will need to resort to such lengths anyway.
Who was Morozova?
Baghra talks more about Morozova, the greatest Fabrikator (people with the power to wield metal, glass, textiles, and chemicals) ever to have lived. Morozova was the one who resurrected the Stag and the Sea Whip, enabling the amplifiers to be used for magical purposes in the first place.
Baghra confesses that Morozova was her father. She grew up with the power to summon darkness and admitted to killing her sister in her youth.
What is the Firebird?
They arrive at Morozova’s workshop, hidden within the surrounding landscape. Using Baghra’s blood, she unlocks a hidden doorway into the fortress. They find Baghra’s mother’s and sister’s tombs inside. Baghra takes Mal to one side and secretly talks about the Firebird with him. Baghra’s father resurrected her sister, making her the third amplifier.
Mal realizes that they are looking for a person, not a creature. Baghra takes Mal outside the fortress and cuts his finger. Mal’s blood also unlocks the door. He is a part of their family too. Baghra reveals that Mal is the Firebird; he must sacrifice his life for the greater good.
Who severs the connection?
While this revelation is discussed, Alina searches through Morozova’s journals and scrolls inside the fortress. She is suddenly attacked by Kirigan. He grabs her, informing her that he has destroyed the First Army camp, her first home. Baghra returns and announces that she will end this to kill her own son. Baghra connects with Alina and Kirigan, joining their vision. She battles Kirigan, severing the connection. Mal and Alina decide to flee. Baghra battles Kirigan, although this action only causes the shadow monsters to emerge. They easily defeat Baghra, protecting Kirigan. She performs her final trick as she dies in her son’s arms. Baghra chops off Kirigan’s hand, separating Kirigan from Alina permanently.
In the second storyline, the Crows find themselves hallucinating thanks to the poison being released in their sealed tomb—one by one, they collapse, undergoing traumatic nightmares or fantastical dreams. Kaz dreams of his brother Jordie drowning him. Jesper says a final goodbye to his mother. Inej is seduced by Kaz, and Tolya murders his own sister. Tolya manages to raise his voice enough to gain Wylan’s attention.
How does Wylan save the others?
Wylan, the demolitions expert, is on the outside of the trap. He uses his explosives to make a hole in the doorway. Wylan then feeds the gang butterflies, which work as an antidote to the poison. They all wake up unharmed.
Jesper is tearful, having witnessed a beautiful hallucination involving his mother. Inej and Kaz lie about their own unusual dreams, though unable to discuss their painful nightmares. Tolya mentions hearing a heartbeat, and they head forwards, hoping to find the sword and its protector.
Ohval arrives home, finding the bodies in the poison trap. Inej attacks Ohval from behind, and the bodies spring back to life to aid her in battle. Ohval is too powerful, though, disarming Tolya and Jesper with ease. Zoya, Nina, and Wylan join the fight, but again, Ohval is too strong. Kaz wheels out an old man, which distracts Ohval entirely.
Who created the Neshyenyer?
The old man happens to be the retired, renowned thief, The Disciple. He is Ohval’s husband. It is revealed that Ohval created the Neshyenyer sword. Ohval is Sankta Neyar, a fearless, immortal warrior.
Ohval is deeply in love with The Disciple and asks why they want the sword, happy to part with it for the right reasons. Kaz explains their need to defeat the shadow army. Ohval offers the sword to Jesper alone. She’s noticed that he is secretly a Durast. Ohval tells Jesper to hone his skills, not to hide them or waste them. Afterward, Jesper tells Wylan that he doesn’t want to hide his powers anymore. They hold hands and kiss in front of all the gang.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 6 Ending Explained
Alina and Mal meet up with Nikolai at Dominik Vertov’s base. They update everyone on Baghra’s passing. Mal admits that he knows the Firebird’s location but doesn’t reveal its true identity. Alina explains that the connection between her and Kirigan has been destroyed. Dominik formulates a plan; one team will find the Firebird with Mal’s help, while the other take on Kirigan and his army.
Alone, Mal explains to Alina the Firebird’s true identity. He mentions Baghra’s sister being resurrected by Morozova. She was the third amplifier. Her powers passed down through the generations. Mal admits that he is the Firebird and a descendant of Morozova’s. He was always destined to find Alina; he was magically drawn to her and the other amplifiers. She won’t accept the truth, though, considering it a trick created by Kirigan or suggesting that they run away together instead. Mal bravely accepts his fate, though; he will sacrifice his life for Alina. The two then make love.
In the final moments of the episode, Kirigan meets with Vladim. Kirigan is given a new golden hand, and Vladim fuses Baghra’s amplifier into Kirigan’s wrist. This allows Kirigan to see Baghra’s final memories. Now Kirigan knows that Mal is the Firebird too.
