Summary

With plenty of new scenery and characters, this premiere thrusts Chise into an interesting new situation that viewers will be curious to learn more about.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 1, “Live and let live. II,” which contains spoilers.

With Cartaphilus subdued, Chise (Atsumi Tanezaki) was able to spend the end of last season enjoying some semblance of normalcy again. She accepted her fate and made a commitment to Elias (Ryota Takeuchi) while still agreeing to be his apprentice.

Hopefully, with his help, she can learn more about her abilities as a Sleigh Beggy and mage and what that means for her future.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

The episode opens with Adolf asking Chise to attend the college for sorcerers. Elias does not understand what benefit it would be, considering she is studying to be a mage.

Although it sounds pretty rude, Adolf explains that as a researcher, he wants Chise to attend college because the chance to study her is too good to pass up. As a Sleigh Beggy and someone who is cursed by both dragons and immortality, a mage like Chise is quite the anomaly.

Despite knowing they may try to run tests on her, Chise tells Elias she does want to attend college so that she can find ways to help people that do not involve sacrificing herself.

What is Elias’ solution to Chise attending college?

Although he does not want her to go, Elias respects Chise’s wishes and decides that the only solution is to attend college with her. While Chise is registered as a special student, Elias is given a job as a visiting instructor in the college’s magic department.

Who is Alexandra Heath?

One of the first people Chise meets is Alexandra Heath, the wizard in charge of the medical room, which gives Chise her first examination. Her appearance is striking, with half of her body fused with a caterpillar’s.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 1 Ending Explained

Who is Lucy Webster?

Once assigned a dorm by Rose Lyn, Chise enters for the first time to meet her roommate, Lucy Webster. The two get off on the wrong foot when Chise accidentally hits Lucy in the face with the door. Although Chise is quickly forgiven, it does not seem like Lucy is interested in becoming friends with her.

The episode ends with a random female student collapsing in Chise’s arms as she searches for the college’s training room.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride is definitely one of the more unique fantasy animes available this season. While the whole idea of Chise and Elias being engaged is still weird to wrap my head around, and luckily easy to forget, there’s always something special about their moments together.

I think it’s in watching Elias learn and grow into something more human than the monster most people see him as. Seeing him experience new emotions is always touching, and this episode is no different.

I appreciate how much stronger and more independent Chise seems in this premiere. She spent so much of season one struggling and suffering. I don’t think I could’ve watched another season of that. However, the premise of this new arc seems very promising.

I’m curious to see Chise expand her knowledge while interacting with people her own age. From what I’ve seen so far, this season has the potential to be a far more exciting one than the first. Hopefully, it capitalizes on that.
