Summary

A relatively uneventful and slow installment, “The Day After” squanders its initial mystery, providing very few clues or hooks to keep viewers engaged. The series is well shot and professionally sculpted, but it seems to be wasting its potential on the whole.

We recap the Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 2, “The Day After,” which contains spoilers.

The second installment picks up “The Day After,” the chaotic events of the opening episode.

Hannah (Jennifer Garner) and Bailey (Angourie Rice) have just discovered the shocking news that Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is not who they think he is. His business is caught up in a scandal, and he’s decided to do a runner, fleeing the crime scene and the FBI.

No one has heard from him in over 24 hours, leading Hannah to weigh her options, while Bailey becomes an outcast at school.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

This installment continues to utilize flashback sequences, eking out more information about Owen. Hannah remembers their picture-perfect relationship and Owen being overworked. She suggests a vacation in Austin, but Owen is very much against the idea. Like all the flashbacks, this will be referred to later in the episode.

Hannah calls her lawyer Carl, but he ignores her messages. She mentions the US Marshal showing up and Owen’s radio silence. She needs her lawyer immediately. Meanwhile, Bailey is being hounded on social media about her dad’s secrets.

How is Bailey treated at school?

Hannah drives Bailey to school, paranoid that they are being followed. She dangerously swerves across lanes and takes a different route.

At school, Bailey is clearly the hot topic of conversation. She sees the students glaring at her and talking about her behind her back. Boyfriend Bobby joins her at lunch to cheer her up, although he has further bad news. He has gotten into Duke College, on the other side of the country.

Hannah spends her day delving into her options. She speaks with Jules and Max, who works at the San Francisco Chronicle. Owen is wanted as a material witness but could become a subject of the investigation if he doesn’t cooperate soon.

At her studio, Hannah attempts to hack into Owen’s laptop. She bypasses the first password but is unable to open a document about his will, which is also password protected.

FBI agents Wu and O’Mackey turn up to question Hannah. They seize Owen’s laptop and ask her about his whereabouts.

Hannah mentions having already told the US Marshal this information. The agents are surprised a US Marshal is involved; they didn’t know about Grady Bradford reaching out to Hannah.

Why is Hannah’s lawyer ignoring her calls?

Hannah’s lawyer continues dodging her calls, so she drives to his boat house instead. Carl says that it is bad timing. They are throwing a party. His wife, Patty, confronts Hannah, angered by Owen’s crimes. She explains that Owen manipulated them into investing in the company, and they look set to lose their life savings. Patty refuses to help Hannah, even though she denies having any knowledge of the fraud.

Running out of options, Hannah is forced to call her ex-boyfriend Jake Davis, who also happens to be a lawyer. Hannah asks for his help, mentioning being harassed by the FBI and a US Marshal.

Again, there are further red flags about Grady, the US Marshal. Jake agrees it is suspicious that he would be involved. Jake believes Owen is guilty if he has run but offers to get a Private Investigator to do some digging in the meantime.

Bailey leaves school early, with all the negativity and Bobby’s heartbreaking news. She returns to the houseboat, where she hears an intruder. Bailey panics and runs over to Hannah’s studio. They call the police, but they are unable to find an intruder or signs of a break-in.

Jules and Max pop by with food to cheer the ladies up. They discuss Grady. He didn’t provide Hannah with a business card but wrote his number on a napkin instead.

Max inspects the napkin; she observes that the phone number has an Austin area code.

While they chat, Jules and Bailey speak in private. Bailey is upset about Bobby’s news and her father’s actions. Flashbacks reveal that Bailey’s mother, Olivia, died in a hit-and-run car accident when Bailey was only four years old.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 2 Ending Explained

Later, Carl asks to meet with Hannah. He tells her that the investment was a lie; Carl was actually in debt and used Owen’s story as a cover.

Hannah urges Carl to tell Patty the truth. After their conversation, Hannah calls the US Marshals Service, which proves Grady is legit.

Why do they fly to Austin?

Hannah asks Bailey about Austin and if she ever visited there with Owen. Bailey has a vague memory of going to an Austin football match with her dad but is unable to elaborate on this weird connection. The episode ends with Hannah deciding to investigate the whole saga herself. She heads to Austin with Bailey, taking a plane ride to the city.
