The Last Thing He Told Me is a new mystery thriller from Apple TV+. The original series is based on the novel of the same name written by Laura Dave, who also serves as a developer on her adaptation, alongside her husband Josh Singer, who co-wrote Spotlight, The Post, and First Man.
The series follows Hannah Hall (Jennifer Garner), whose life is upended when her husband, Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), goes missing. Owen leaves Hannah an ominous message that says, ‘Protect her.’ Whilst daughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) finds a duffel bag stuffed full of money in her school locker the same day.
Hannah and Bailey try to unravel this mystery, discovering many dark secrets about Owen and his past life in the process. This all inter-connects with an ongoing FBI investigation, the involvement of a US Marshal called Grady (Augusto Aguilera), and many seedy criminal undertakings.
The show has all the traits of an addictive mystery, with some serious star power on the screen, but will Apple be renewing the series for a second season, or has The Last Thing He Told Me been canceled after just seven installments?

The Last Thing He Told Me has been billed as a miniseries, making it highly unlikely that Apple will renew the show for a second outing. In recent times, Apple TV+ has been known to produce one-off series, including Black Bird, The Essex Serpent, and Five Days at Memorial. None of these projects were ever renewed.
The series will more than likely remain a limited series due to its poor reception from critics. It currently holds a rotten 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes (May 11th, 2023). Critics have commented on the show’s monotonous pacing and lack of emotional connection. Although Jennifer Garner has been praised for almost saving the production with her game performance.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though; fans of the series will be happy to see that the show is in the top charts over on Apple TV+. Making its way to the third spot behind Ted Lasso and The Big Door Prize at the last check-in, which is promising indeed. And the IMDB rating isn’t too bad either, currently pitched at 6.9/10.
Audiences may be more invested in this series than the critics. Yet Apple TV+ has started to side with the critics over the viewing public, with shows like Shantaram, Dear Edward, and Truth Be Told getting canceled even though the fan base was clearly there.
I’m going to predict that this series will not be renewed, either. There may be room to continue the story, but I don’t think the current statistics warrant a follow-up season. As always, we will keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of The Last Thing He Told Me.
