We were dealt a blow at the end of Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 1. Kate had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. To make matters worse, Kate’s main support system and best friend, Tully, was nowhere to be seen. The two women had fallen out because of a car accident involving Marah.
Before the cancer diagnosis, Kate and Tully started a new life without each other. They desperately missed each other yet remained stubborn. After the cancer diagnosis, Kate tried to reach out to Tully, but she had already left to embark on a career opportunity, creating a documentary on Global Warming.
Audiences will have felt a measure of anxiety when Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2 came out, wondering if Kate Mularkey had died.
Does Kate Die in Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2?
Sadly, Kate dies in Firefly Lane Season 2 after cancer spreads to other parts of her body, including her brain.
However, her death was not as straightforward as it sounds. At the start of Part 2, Kate reconciles with Tully while on chemotherapy and seemingly beats cancer. Kate appears to enjoy a reasonably healthy life again. She has rekindled a loving relationship with Johnny, and her friendship with Tully is as strong as ever.
It did look like Kate would not die in the early stages of Part 2.
How did Kate Die in Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2?
Kate died in Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2 when the cancer returned and spread to her brain. She died in her family home, looking out to the beautiful sea. The last person she was with was her best friend, Tully.
In a tragic twist, Kate discovers that her cancer has returned when her doctor examines her X-rays after a check-up. The diagnosis was way worse than feared. However, Kate decided to keep her second diagnosis a secret. She felt like she was burdening her family and friends.
Johnny did not discover that Kate had cancer again until their second wedding. Kate was struggling and had no choice but to tell Johnny the truth. Despite this, she goes ahead with the wedding, and Tully finds out too.
There was a glimmer of hope that Kate may survive cancer again after Tully and Danny managed to secure clinical trials. However, once the cancer spread to the brain, which caused seizures, Kate was no longer applicable to the program.
Kate spent her dying days ensuring that her family would be OK following her death and that Tully gets the life she wants (by being with Danny).
Whose funeral is it at the end of Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2?
In an upsetting end to the series, we learn that it was Kate’s funeral. Tully cannot attend the funeral as she cannot overcome the emotions it brings. Kate was her best friend, and they promised each other to grow old together.
However, Kate did leave Tully a box for the funeral day; inside, there was an iPod (with their favorite music), a letter from Kate, a joint, and a book that Kate had written about her life called “Firefly Lane.”
It was a fitting end to the series.
