There’s a strong case to be made that Succession isn’t just the finest TV show airing right now, but that it’s among the very best of all time. The fourth season, particularly, has delivered banger after banger, especially since the third episode turned Jesse Armstrong’s dog-eat-dog universe on its head by boldly killing off its most significant figure.
From our recap:
This is shot in one take or at least the illusion of one, and it goes on for so long that it seems almost impossible there won’t be a surprise outcome. But there isn’t. I have little hesitation in saying this is the finest-acted sequence of television I’ve personally ever seen, and it might be the best ever put to film. If it’s not, it’s certainly close.
It has been consistent greatness from there, with the remaining Roy family proving themselves to be even more manipulative, selfish, and broken than we first imagined. With the finale around the corner, many are speculating about a potential fifth season, so here’s everything we know.
Will there be a Succession Season 5 on HBO?
Renewed or canceled status: Canceled
Jesse Armstrong has already confirmed that this fourth season is the last in the Roy saga.
The show is critically beloved and wildly popular, so this is primarily an artistic decision. Succession was never the kind of show that could go on for many seasons, but after the change-up in Episode 3, it certainly seems like it has become a slightly different story that could potentially have gone somewhere very new.
This is to say nothing of the fact that, as of the penultimate episode of the season, it’s still virtually impossible to predict not just what will happen but also how every character arc and subplot could be given a satisfactory end.
This is, naturally, fuelling speculation about another season, and it’s no secret that the cast and perhaps even Armstrong himself have thought about this and discussed what it may look like. The likeliest outcome may well be a spin-off, in the same universe with some of the same characters.
