This article discusses the possibility of Love & Death Season 2 on HBO Max and contains spoilers for the first season.

Love & Death is the HBO Max of the famous killing of Betty Gore by her churchgoing friend Candy Montgomery, who struck her 40 times with a wood-splitting axe after having an affair with her husband.

The story has been adapted before, in the TV movie A Killing in a Small Town in 1990, and in the Hulu miniseries Candy last year. The Max version garnered a fair amount of interest in its casting of Marvel’s own Elizabeth Olsen as Candy.

Despite this being a miniseries based on a true story, fans are nonetheless wondering if there is more of the story to be told, or perhaps if the format itself could be adapted to other true-crime tales. Here’s everything we know in that regard.

Will there be a Love & Death Season 2 on HBO Max?

Renewed or canceled status: TBC

At the time of writing HBO Max have not officially renewed or canceled the show, though it stands to reason that there will not be a Love & Death Season 2.

As mentioned above this is a true-crime story. Seven episodes are enough to recount the breadth of it, and the Love & Death finale ends with title cards letting us know what happened to the key players after the outcome of Candy’s trial.

With no more of this story left to tell, and two previous versions of it already out there, including one as recently as 2022, there’s basically no justification for a second season.

The more salient question, one supposes, is if another fitting true-crime story that would work with the title might form a second season, retaining some of the same themes and perhaps stunt-casting more prominent Hollywood stars in the key roles. This is a possibility, but Love & Death doesn’t strike as a particularly compelling brand name, and in an entertainment climate already so replete with true-crime stories, there would be no need to continue directly from here.

As ever, we’ll keep this article updated with new information as soon as we get it.
