Summary

Platonic feels a little reiterative here as Sylvia continues to make terrible decisions while hanging out with Will.

This recap of Platonic Season 1 Episode 4, “Divorce Party”, contains spoilers.

After the triple-bill premiere, Platonic settles into a little too-familiar groove in its fourth episode, “Divorce Party”. Here, Will continues to fret over his divorce, while Sylvia continues to make bad decisions in his company. All the while, Charlie begins to wonder about Sylvia’s state of mind and her relationship with Will.

It still has highlights – Rose Byrne on ketamine, particularly – but the Apple TV+ series is going to have to do a little more if it wants to sustain an audience through its entire run.

Platonic Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

Will is, in simple terms, a man-child, and you can see it in the opening scene this week when he tries to hook up with a much younger woman only to be thwarted by her roommate watching the Succession finale.

One gets the sense he’s so annoyed about Audrey moving in with her new boyfriend not because she’s broadcasting it on social media, but because he can’t envision how his own life might reach that point given where he’s at now.

Who is Kirk Friedkin?

Sylvia isn’t doing much better. Chalie takes some initiative after a conversation with his hilarious friend Stewart and decides to give her the number of Kirk Friedkin, a partner in a law firm who might be able to give her a job.

That would entail Sylvia actually calling him, though, which she puts off doing again and again until the worst possible time. But more on that soon.

In the meantime, Sylvia attends a divorce party, and gets the idea to throw one for Will. The setting is a restaurant, and the attendees include Will’s friends Andy and Omar, along with Reggie and some of his frat-boy buddies.

Quickly, the event descends into hyper-masculine chaos, with everyone deciding to go to a strip club. Sylvia doesn’t want to go, obviously, but Will begs her. In their conversation it becomes clear that Will is at least somewhat aware of how pathetic his life is, since he wants Sylvia to be present so him being at a strip club with a bunch of frat boys becomes ironic rather than deeply worrying.

Platonic Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained

A compromise is reached instead – drugs. Sylvia is happy to take a bump of cocaine, but she’s less enthused when he learns it was primarily ketamine. Almost immediately she falls deep into a K-hole, embarrassing herself in front of another parent, destroying multiple shelves in a store, and eventually deciding to call Friedkin at 2am.

Still, at least Will seems to be getting on with Peyton, the girl from the top of the episode. Perhaps a relationship will help steer him in the right direction. But where will that leave Sylvia?
