Summary

A decent chapter nimbly moves the story along.

This recap of the Netflix K-Drama series King the Land Season 1 Episode 4 contains spoilers.

Episode four of King the Land did a strong job of moving its plot points forward but did sometimes fall short of packing a memorable punch. Nevertheless, with the wheels firmly in motion now, it does appear things will soon pick up.

King the Land Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

As Sa-rang finally splits from her inconsiderate boyfriend, tired of his selfishness, Gu Won finds himself humorously discussing his romantic situation with a traffic policeman. Here, the rich heir is given plenty of advice on the growing affection he has towards his seemingly attached crush, though it’s mostly told from the lens of the cop’s own heartbreak.

How do Gu Won and Hwa-ran respond to King Group’s revenue loss?

While Sa-rang receives encouragement from her grandmother about splitting up with Yu-nam, Gu Won is scolded by his father over First Royal Hotel overtaking their business in lounge revenue. Ultimately, this leads to King Hotel’s Head Manager clashing with his sister again, this time over who should be involved with getting the company back on track.

With the kindhearted support of her new manager, Sa-rang prepares to officially begin work at King the Land, the “first-class” portion of King Hotel. Concurrently, Sang-sik begins to panic about Gu Won’s inactivity in responding to First Royal Hotel’s recent revenue success.

Next, Gu Won bites back at Sang-sik, frustrated that his assistant joked about his affection towards Sa-rang following the Head Manager’s petty comments that the concierge must be specially trained to have the right “etiquette” for King the Land. Elsewhere, Hwa-ran puts the “infamous witch” Do Ra-hee in charge of Da-eul’s duty-free shop in the hopes of doubling sales there, leaving the staff worried.

With Hwa-ran continuing her ruthless streak of setting new sales targets and firing employees she deems unprofessional, Gu Won takes a different approach. He holds a staff meeting with those working at King the Land, promising to financially incentivize them should they reach their performance targets.

How does Gu Won mess up dinner plans with Sa-rang?

Continuing, we soon see Da-eul is living life without much freedom. Her husband is seldom present, her parents are demanding when it comes to food, her wider family does not help out with chores, and she still has to look after her daughter too.

Frustrated by the fact Sa-rang didn’t respond to his text or calls, Gu Won meets directly with the concierge the next day. Yet the whole encounter is pointless for the rich heir, who is firmly rejected in his offer of dinner.

As Pyeong-hwa and Ro-un grow a bond over a meal, Gu Won’s suddenly planned “welcome dinner” for Sa-rang proves a disaster. Not only are the rest of King the Land’s staff present, but he embarrasses the concierge by gifting her luxury steak in place of the raw fish everyone else is enjoying. Thus, Sa-rang tells Gu Won she now feels “on pins” around her smug colleagues, wanting the hotel Head Manager to act like he isn’t aware of her going forward.

How does Hwa-ran taunt Gu Won?

When Gu Won is warned “not to end up like mother” by Hwa-ran, noting she isn’t remembered by anyone, it triggers a memory of how his sister would always taunt him. In particular, he recalls how his older sibling attempted to discard his mum’s pocket watch purely for her own personal enjoyment.

After Sa-rang finds herself rebuked simply for successfully selling the King Group Chairman wine for his meal (the concierge was told to upsell and advertise things like whisky instead), she is greeted by Yu-nam. He wishes to try and celebrate the hotel worker’s birthday with her, only to wind up bluntly told he is now a “stranger” to his ex.

King the Land Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained

Taking herself to a quiet spot, Sa-rang cries in the rain, until Gu Won arrives, holding an umbrella that shields her, yet strangely proclaiming the area as his “spot.” Then, the episode ends with the concierge falling into the rich heir’s arms, the two staring deeply into each other’s eyes.
