The season one finale of the sci-fi hit series Silo reveals plenty of surprising answers to some of the greatest mysteries of this dystopian world. Yet with that, many more questions are raised by the time the end credits roll. One of the questions that is answered is the truth about the world outside of the Silo. So, is it a luscious landscape of Utopian splendor or a barren wasteland?

When Juliette’s helmet finally displays the true reality of the outside world, we see that the surrounding landscape is, in fact, a barren, desolate wasteland. And as the camera zooms out further, we see many other Silo sites, just like Juliette’s, covering the entire surrounding area.

In this wintry wilderness, nothing grows in the ground or lives on the land. All that remains are a few tree stumps and the craters where each Silo site is positioned. It seems the truth is that the apocalyptic outside world is the real deal. Nothing can survive on the Earth’s surface anymore.

What do the other Silos mean?

This shocking revelation proves that there are countless other Silo sites in surprisingly close proximity to Juliette’s Silo, and these will more than likely shelter the rest of humanity safely within them. There are possibly more survivors of this apocalypse after all.

Juliette’s suit keeps out the toxic air that surrounds her, so it is possible that she could walk to a neighboring Silo. Hopefully, season 2 will explore the other Silos, and Juliette will be able to survive her current predicament in a new society.

It is also worth mentioning that when George searched through the illegal hard drive, he found a blueprint of his Silo, and there was a tunnel leading out of it. This could mean that all the Silos are connected. Maybe the other Silos interact with their neighbors?

Was the footage of the outside world a lie?

Those that go out to clean see a different view of the outside world, which is, in fact, a lie. They see a beautiful green landscape, with birds flying in a clear, blue sky. This is all a trick of the eye, thanks to some nifty futuristic technology.

It’s made with a hologram, and when Juliette places Holston’s Sheriff’s badge on the ground, it goes straight through this hologram onto the real ground underneath.

Holston and Allison saw this fake facade, but Bernard switched it off to reveal the truth to Juliette.

The citizens inside the Silo all see the reality of the outside world. This is a clever twist ending from the filmmakers, as we were to believe that the dystopia was a lie, but it was the truth. The audience was played, and so was Juliette, who thought she had uncovered a conspiracy within the Silo. She had actually been tricked all along.
