Summary

“Love Lost” tries to tackle many emotional issues but struggles to juggle these weighty scenes for most of the episode. Yet it regains some focus by the end. The series is still corny and contrived, but I can see why it would appeal to its teenage audience.

We recap the Prime Video series The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 1, “Love Lost,” which contains spoilers.

Prime Video’s smash-hit teen romance returns for an eagerly anticipated second season. In the show’s premiere episode, “Love Lost,” Belly (Lola Tung) tries to move on after hurting both brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), while grieving the loss of their mother Susannah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

The first episode opens with a dream sequence, as Belly pictures the perfect summer with the gang and her boyfriend Conrad all at Cousins Beach together.

In reality, she’s actually in school daydreaming. She isn’t with Conrad anymore, and his mother, Susannah is dead.

Belly’s summer couldn’t get much worse, but the student is then informed that her grades are slipping as well, and she’s off the volleyball team. At this rate, she will struggle to get into any half-decent colleges unless she vastly improves.

Meanwhile, her brother Steven is graduating as valedictorian and is then heading to Princeton next. They attend his graduation, where he makes a motivational speech about making the most of life. Afterward, they attend a meal with their parents Laurel and John.

What is Laurel’s new book about?

It’s revealed that Laurel has written a book about Susannah, but she doesn’t want to promote it as the grief is still too raw. Her publishers want Laurel to attend a meet-and-greet event with booksellers, but she has turned the opportunity down. Belly and Steven leave the meal early to go and prepare for the graduation party.

In “Love Lost,” every scene in the present is then inter-cut with a flashback sequence to the previous summer.

After the events of the first season, Belly confesses to both Conrad and Jeremiah about kissing the other brother. Conrad doesn’t seem too bothered; he’s madly in love with Belly no matter what.

Why did Belly break up with Conrad?

Belly agrees to end things with Jeremiah. Although the brother doesn’t take this news quite as well and says, he doesn’t even want to be friends with Belly anymore. The brothers are in an unusual place right now, coming to terms with their mother’s cancer and the trial she is undergoing. Because of these complications, Belly decides to end her relationship with Conrad.

Conrad gifts Belly with an infinity necklace anyway. They all return home once the summer has come to an end. Conrad phones Belly a few weeks later, and they agree to stay friends.

The duo phone each other constantly, which starts to distract Belly from her school work.

They discuss everything, with Conrad even disclosing that his father cheated on his mother in the past. The couple talks about relationships and romance. Belly thinks that her parents divorced because there was no spark between them anymore.

Back in the present, Belly attends Steven’s graduation party. Belly’s old friend Taylor is there with her new boyfriend Milo, who plays a gig with his band at the party.

Taylor pressures Belly to move on from Conrad. Belly tries her luck with a classmate called Cory, but he isn’t interested in her.

Why do Belly and Steven argue?

Having been rejected, Belly asks to go home, but she is Steven’s designated driver. Steven isn’t happy about Belly’s decision to leave early, and the siblings argue. He calls Belly a killjoy and mentions how she has made everything weird with his friends Conrad and Jeremiah.

Belly brings up Susannah’s death, but Steven calls her selfish. Taylor tells Belly to ignore Steven; he’s just drunk. But Steven’s words have unlocked something inside of Belly.

She snaps, saying how she’s ruined everything and doesn’t want to be sad anymore.

The student drives home alone, thinking back to the time when Conrad surprised her at Halloween. He turned up unannounced at her house. Conrad said that Jeremiah was over her, but he himself could never get over Belly.

The couple then kissed one another.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 1 Ending Explained

Back at home in the present, Belly is greeted by her mother. Laurel has just heard about Belly’s bad grades and the fact that she’s lost her volleyball captaincy. Belly mentions Susannah’s death again.

Laurel says that she cannot keep using that as an excuse; Belly needs to take some responsibility for her actions.

Belly points out that it was a hard year for her, and she’s had to look after her own mother on top of everything else. She goes to her bedroom and looks at old photographs of the Fisher family. This argument seems to motivate Laurel to accept the bookseller event opportunity.

The episode ends with Belly phoning Jeremiah. She wants to know why he’s been ignoring her text messages and calls. Jeremiah asks if Conrad is with her, he’s worried about his brother. Conrad has gone missing. Belly agrees to help Jeremiah look for Conrad.
