Summary

“Love Scene” manages to turn Belly and Conrad’s rocky relationship into a tasteful, if glorified, teen romance, while Susannah’s sad storyline still doesn’t feel earned or emotive enough for its raw subject matter.

We recap the Prime Video series The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 2, “Love Scene,” which contains spoilers.

The second season continues to split its time between two main storylines in “Love Scene.” In the present, Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) take a road trip to Cousins Beach to search for Conrad (Christopher Briney), who has gone missing. While in flashbacks, Conrad and Belly drive to the summer house for a romantic Christmas getaway.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

Let’s start off with that flashback narrative. Belly sneaks out of her home and is whisked away by Conrad. They plan to escape to Cousins Beach at Christmas to see the summer home in the snow.

They’re clearly very much in love, still here and excited for this mischievous getaway.

On the drive, Conrad informs Belly that he will be switching his major to Biology. They make their way to the seaside town, ogling at the beautiful Christmas lights above the shop windows.

While in the present, things couldn’t be more different. Belly is taking the coach to Conrad’s dorm. It’s summer, and she is practically estranged from her ex-lover.

She arrives at campus and meets up with Jeremiah, who is stressed about his brother’s sudden disappearance.

Where has Conrad gone?

They check out his dorm, where Belly and Jeremiah bump into Conrad’s roommate. He was told that Conrad was heading to Cousins Beach; that is where they’ll find him. Conrad has skipped his lectures and could fail his course if he doesn’t make it back for an important exam. Jeremiah and Belly decide to take a road trip to the summer house to search for Conrad.

Jeremiah worries that Conrad has fallen out with his father again. Yet it has only been a month since their mother’s passing. Maybe the grief is still crippling the brother too.

Meanwhile, Steven and his mother, Laurel, go out for a catch-up breakfast meal. Laurel is preparing for her booksellers’ meet and greet. She decides to go shopping for the occasion.

The mother and son talk about Belly, who is failing at school. Steven suggests that Laurel gives Belly some space.

How does Steven figure out where Belly is?

Steven bumps into Taylor at the bookstore. She covers for Belly, but Steven soon figures out that something is amiss; Taylor is a bad liar, after all. Taylor then admits that Belly has gone to Cousins Beach to find Conrad. Taylor asks Steven to stay out of it; Belly needs to clean up her own mess.

On the road trip, Jeremiah and Belly sit in silence. It’s terribly awkward between the two. Jeremiah refuses to discuss his grief. One of the tires goes, and they get into an argument by the side of the road. Jeremiah is still furious with Belly.

Why is Jeremiah upset with Belly?

Belly apologizes for what happened at Susannah’s funeral, although we are still unsure what actually went down at this event. Jeremiah isn’t concerned with the events of the funeral; he is still hurt about last summer. Belly cheated on Jeremiah with his own brother, and Jeremiah was forced to pretend everything was OK.

In her defense, Belly states that she thought Jeremiah was over her. She apologizes for abandoning Jeremiah in his time of need. They then hug one another. Belly accepts that she ignored Jeremiah, but she wants to right this mistake right away.

As they get closer to the summer house, the two narratives interconnect. Belly thinks back to this perfect getaway with Conrad. They ran on the beach in the snow and then made love with the log fire.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Episode 2 Ending Explained

Back in the present, Belly and Jeremiah arrive at the summer home. Belly narrates this scene, talking about how she loves and hates Conrad in equal amounts; she doesn’t want to ever see him again but is excited to be reunited with him. These contradictions highlight her love for Conrad.

Jeremiah enters the house and argues with Conrad straight away. Belly walks in as Conrad makes an announcement. The summer house is up for sale.

Conrad looks at Belly as she enters the room, completely surprised to see her standing there.
