Summary

The villainous Kathy provides some much-needed tension and conflict in “Beat Me at My Own Game.” This highlights what the show is missing. Unlike Netflix’s other soap opera series, Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias lacks any natural antagonists or drama for most of the series.

We recap the Netflix series Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 8, “Beat Me at My Own Game,” which contains significant spoilers.

Episode eight of Sweet Magnolias, titled “Beat Me at My Own Game,” follows the intersecting lives of the citizens of Serenity. Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) reunites with her best friends, Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) try to regroup after the kitchen vandalism, and Kathy (Wynn Everett) finally gets what she wants all along.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 8 Recap

Carrying on from the last episode’s cliffhanger ending, Dana Sue, and Ronnie walk around the ransacked kitchen. They know right away that this is Kathy’s doing, but the police find no evidence to support that. Dana Sue decides to clean up the mess and move on, but Ronnie is rattled.

What does the message ‘Trish’ mean?

He meets with Kathy straight away. The one-word message left in the kitchen said Trish. This is the word Kathy and Ronnie used to describe Patricia when they were children. It’s implied that Patricia was a horrid lady, possibly a stepmother or their father’s girlfriend. And Kathy has reused it as a secret message for Ronnie; she couldn’t help but prove her involvement.

Ronnie can’t believe that Kathy would stoop so low to destroy Sullivans out of spite. Kathy believes that the restaurant should be hers; she deserves it.

Ronnie is shocked that Kathy is still bitter about something that happened twenty years ago. He orders her to leave town. Kathy will, but she wants something in return.

Elsewhere, Helen returns from her trip. She finds Maddie’s letter on the floor. Helen reads the letter and is touched by the sentiment.

She instantly texts the Sweet Magnolia’s chat group about a meet-up. Maddie plans another margarita night immediately. Dana Sue receives the message while tidying up in the kitchen.

Does Helen apologize?

The Sweet Magnolias are finally reunited once again for another margarita night. They practically trip over one another to apologize to each other. Helen apologizes first, admitting that she is stubborn and should have listened to her friend’s advice. Their concerns were valid.

Maddie holds herself accountable for her own actions as well. She stresses that she is working on herself, as is Dana Sue. They all hug one another, happy to be friends once again. The three women then discuss Dana Sue’s vow renewal with a few alcoholic beverages.

Why does Kathy leave town?

Dana Sue’s perfect night is ruined, though. Ronnie confesses to seeing Kathy. He tells his wife that Kathy will be leaving town, but he has to pay her off to achieve this small victory. Dana Sue is heartbroken by the news. Ronnie just wanted to protect his family and be rid of her, but he has possibly made matters worse. Kathy has only left because she has been paid off to do so.

In the other subplots, Tyler gets fellow student Olivia to help him study statistics, and Kyle organizes a group get-together with plans to renovate the local playground. Isaac suggests that Noreen speak with Helen about her legal standing with Bill. And Erik finds out that Kathy and Dana Sue are enemies.

Thankfully Erik has already quit his job at Z’s Place, but the damage may already be done. Kathy has caused chaos, got her money, and gone. She asks Bill to leave town with her. Although he declines her invitation to stay closer to his kids.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 8 Ending Explained

The episode concludes with Ronnie, Skeeter, and Cal making a grand entrance into Sullivans. They are all dressed in flashy tuxedos, showing off their outfits for Ronnie and Dana Sue’s vow renewal. Dana Sue is still angry with Ronnie, though, and she has more bad news.

Why is the vow renewal canceled?

She has crunched the numbers. Due to Annie’s college fund, the new foundation, and Kathy’s pay-off, there is no money left for the vow renewal. Dana Sue admits that the event will have to be canceled now.
