We recap the 2023 Netflix series Sweet Magnolias Season 3 (Episodes 1-10), which contains spoilers as it details what happened.
The romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias is back. The Netflix original series about a small town in South Carolina returns for more wholesome goodness. In season three, the Serenity sisters Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) search for happiness and wholeness once again.

Recap – What happened in Sweet Magnolias Season 3? (Episodes 1-10)
Episode 1 – “Meaning to Tell You”
After the fight, Cal seeks legal advice from Helen and finds friendly support from the local community. Cal leaves his coaching position and looks to rebuild his life once again. Dana Sue shows Ronnie the check from Miss Frances. They don’t know what to do with this life-changing amount of money.
Ronnie’s sister Kathy comes back into town to stir up more trouble. Helen has two men after her, Ryan and Erik. She must decide between the two. She tells Erik about Ryan’s proposal.
Episode 2 – “Meet Me Where I Am”
Maddie and Cal work on their relationship. They decide to avoid any intimacy between each other for two whole weeks. Helen tells Erik the truth about Ryan’s proposal, he is furious and ends their friendship on the spot.
Dana Sue and Ronnie plan their daughter Annie’s sweet sixteen birthday party. They want to use Frances’ money to pay for it, but Annie wants a small gathering instead. Helen and Ryan discuss the proposal. Ryan agrees to move to Serenity for the marriage to work.
Episode 3 – “The Searchers”
It’s the Forager Festival at Serenity. The friends all get into groups of three for the scavenger hunt. They are all competitive, trash-talking one another in a wholesome manner. Kathy asks Erik if he will come and work for her rival business at Z’s Place. After the hunt, the Mayor announces the winners and then resigns from his position.
Episode 4 – “Be Bold”
Erik injures himself at work, distracted by his heartache for Helen. Dana Sue gives him time off to recover. In this break, Erik decides to go and work for Kathy instead. Dana Sue realizes that Miss Frances saw her as a daughter. Dana Sue wants to use the money for good in the community now.
Helen offers to take in teenager CeCe. Ronnie proposes a vow renewal with his wife Dana Sue. Maddie and Cal finally kiss after two weeks without. Their relationship is stronger than ever now.
Episode 5 – “On This Foundation”
It’s Annie’s sweet sixteen birthday party. Her parents throw her an amazing party, with all the town in attendance. Kathy crashes the party though, making a scene. Annie is heartbroken and runs away.
Helen and Ryan start to argue. Ryan feels like an outsider and sympathizes with Kathy. CeCe moves in with Helen, creating further friction between Helen and Ryan. At margarita night, Maddie asks Helen if she is happy, sensing the tension. Helen flips and orders her friends to leave.
Episode 6 – “And a Star to Steer Her By”
The community helps out Harlan, whose father has had a stroke. They support their friend and help make adjustments at his home for when he eventually leaves the hospital. Helen is still bitter towards Maddie and Dana Sue though. Then Maddie and Dana Sue fall out with each other as well.
It’s the first day of school. Tensions are high between Tyler and Annie. Tyler is unsure about his college applications. Ryan tries to convince Helen to move away from Serenity, but she will not change her mind. Ryan breaks up with Helen, unable to fulfill her wants and desires.
Episode 7 – “Somebody I’m Longing to See”
Helen travels home to be with her family in her time of need. Maddie only makes things worse trying to repair her broken friendships. Annie’s secret relationship with Jackson is exposed. Dana Sue grounds Annie for lying to her.
Bill tries to make amends with Noreen but only makes things worse. Isaac and Noreen both order him to stay away. Dana Sue’s kitchen at Sullivan’s is ransacked.
Episode 8 – “Beat Me at My Own Game”
Dana Sue and Ronnie suspect Kathy is behind the vandalism. Ronnie meets with Kathy and pays her off to leave town. Kathy admits to the crime and takes the money. Maddie writes Helen and Dana Sue letters; this leads to the trio reuniting. They all apologize to one another.
Kyle organizes the renovation of a local playground. Dana Sue realizes that her family can’t afford the vow renewal now that Ronnie has paid off his sister. The vow renewal is canceled.
Episode 9 – “A Game of Telephone”
Maddie and Helen organize Dana Sue’s vow renewal, offering to make it a smaller, cheaper gathering. Of course, this quickly spirals out of control, becoming a whole town affair once again.
The trio pitches the Serenity Serves Initiative to the interfaith council under their Magnolia Community Foundation banner, finally using Miss Frances’ money for good in the community. Their pitch is successful.
Episode 10 – “Save My Place”
In the season finale, Dana Sue, and Erik meet up. Erik apologizes for betraying Dana Sue. She wants him to work for her again, but Erik is too proud. He eventually accepts her offer though. Erik will make Dana Sue’s cupcake tower as well.
Harlan’s father returns home from the hospital. Maddie tells her friends she is writing a children’s book. Annie breaks up with Jackson. Tyler tells his mother that he is taking a gap year. Kathy crashes Dana Sue and Ronnie’s vow renewal. Although she actually apologizes and makes a truce this time around.
At the party, Dana Sue, and Ronnie are happily in love. Annie and Tyler hold hands. Cal and Maddie seem closer than ever. And it looks like Helen and Erik’s relationship may just be ready to restart all over again too.
