Summary
The season opener nicely sets up the premise while reintroducing viewers to the main characters and the show’s irreverent humor. Sheen, Tennant, and Hamm are all sensational in their respective roles. They are having a lot of fun with this inventive and original script.
We recap the Amazon Prime Video series Good Omens Season 2 Episode 1, “The Arrival,” which contains spoilers.
Prime Video’s adaption of Good Omens is back for a second season. This time around, creator Neil Gaiman is using entirely new material, carrying on the story that he started with author Terry Pratchett back in the early nineties.
The season opener, “The Arrival,” reunites Crowley (David Tennant) and Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) as they deal with the sudden appearance of a bemused amnesiac Gabriel (Jon Hamm) on earth.
Good Omens Season 2 Episode 1 Recap
The season premiere starts ‘Before the Beginning,’ in the emptiness of nothingness. Crowley is an angel floating in this nothingness. He then creates an infinite universe from this nothingness.
Angel Aziraphale witnesses this stunning creation and compliments Crowley on his work.
Unfortunately, Aziraphale has heard rumors that the universe will be getting destroyed soon. Upstairs want to focus on human beings instead. Crowley is upset; he ponders, questioning God’s decision.
Aziraphale worries that Crowley will get into trouble for defying the Almighty.
Fast forward to the present day, and Crowley is now a demon; his meddling appears to have backfired badly. He’s visited by fellow demon Shax, who warns him that something is going down in the Upstairs.
Shax asks Crowley to check in with his old pal Aziraphale to see what the problem could be.
The problem happens to be walking naked down Aziraphale’s street in London. The naked being is Gabriel, the Supreme Archangel of Heaven. He walks over to Aziraphale’s bookshop with a package covering his package.
What is wrong with Gabriel?
Gabriel has no recollection of anything, though. He doesn’t know who he is or where he is, or why he was sent in the first place. Aziraphale ushers him into the building, away from the crowd of onlookers. All Gabriel knows is that he felt compelled to come here and that something terrible is about to happen.
Aziraphale checks Gabriel’s package (carefully) but finds that it is empty. There are no clues whatsoever for Aziraphale to follow.
Gabriel can’t even remember what he was supposed to be delivering. Aziraphale doesn’t know what to do, so he contacts his dear old friend Crowley.
Crowley wants to get rid of Gabriel immediately, fearing the ramifications of this sudden arrival. Aziraphale wants to help Gabriel, though. Crowley reminds him that Gabriel is still his old boss, who once wanted to send him to Hell.
These two clearly have a history. Crowley refuses to help and leaves.
What is Crowley’s reward if he helps Hell?
Then Beelzebub pays Crowley a visit, taking him on a quick trip back to Hell. She mentions how Crowley is a traitor, but he will be forgiven and handed a promotion if he helps them out. Word has spread that Gabriel has vanished. If Crowley can find Gabriel and hand him over to Hell, then he will be rewarded with whatever he wants in return.
Crowley is unsure, but Beelzebub isn’t finished convincing him just yet. She mentions Heaven’s punishments. Those found to be involved in this disappearance will be handed extreme sanctions in response.
Beelzebub makes it clear; that their punishment will involve Crowley being erased from existence altogether.
Good Omens Season 2 Episode 1 Ending Explained
Petrified by this warning, Crowley heads straight back to Aziraphale. He apologizes to the angel and even performs the complimentary apology dance. Crowley admits that Aziraphale was right; they need to hide Gabriel to keep him safe. Both Heaven and Hell are after him.
Together they perform a little miracle, shielding Gabriel from anyone who is trying to find him. Unfortunately, this plan has the opposite effect. Alarm bells ring in Heaven; they have actually pinpointed their location to those Upstairs instead of hiding their involvement.
