Summary

This is a perfectly fine animated super-girl musical. It has a cute story and some funny moments and the animation looks good.

Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie (also known as Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening) is the first full feature to come out of the beloved French animated series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir

Written and directed by Jeremy Zag, the movie had a full theatrical release in France in June before dropping on Netflix. This adaptation of the Miraculous franchise reimagines the story’s origin while adding a few cheesy songs to the mix to match the Disney brand.

Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie Review and Plot Summary

Marinette (voiced in English by Cristina Valenzuela) is a clumsy Parisian teenager who struggles to make friends and attracts the wrath of her school’s bully, Chloé (Selah Victor), on her very first day.

While hiding from Chloe, Marinette runs into Adrien (Bryce Papenbrook) and immediately develops a crush on the boy. Adrien is the son of wealthy fashion designer Gabriel Agreste (Keith Silverstein) and has recently lost his mother.

Unbeknownst to Adrien, his father is in possession of the Butterfly Miraculous jewel that he uses to turn into the villain Hawk Moth. He wants to collect all the other miraculous jewels so he can use them to resurrect his dead wife.

Sensing the danger, the guardian of the Miracle Box releases the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous, which find their way to Adrien and Marinette, respectively. With the help of the miraculous jewels and their two kwamis, the teenagers turn into their superhero aliases, Ladybug and Cat Noir.

In between songs, they must figure out their feelings for each other and a way to stop Hawk Moth from destroying Paris and even the world.

Considering how popular the original series is, rebooting the narrative for the feature doesn’t seem like the best idea. While the lack of continuity may attract some new fans to the franchise, it can also annoy long-term fans.

The music could have been better. Not only are most of the songs forgettable, but it’s also obvious that the voice actors and the singers are different people, and the contrast between voices takes away from the story. (The French version has the same issue).

Is Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie worth watching?

This is a perfectly fine animated super-girl musical. It has a cute story and some funny moments, and the animation looks good. Some of the action scenes look amazing, and the animated shots of Paris do a good job of recreating the city’s magic.

The movie is a mediocre family-friendly animation that’s likely to get the kids excited, but it’s engaging enough to keep the adults mildly entertained.
