Based on Mark Millar and artist Peter Gross’s 2004 comic American Jesus, The Chosen One is a Netflix adaptation of the story that switches the U.S. setting for Mexico and the small town of Santa Rosalía.
The plot, though, still revolves around a young boy’s discovery of his Christ-like powers. The show begins with Jodie escaping a violent father with his mother Sarah and picks up with his small-town life years later, where he’s popping pills to suppress his powers and has no idea of the secretive, magical heritage that is about to upend the lives of him and his friends.

The Chosen One has little in common with Millar’s more well-known work, which includes movies like Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman. It doesn’t feel plucked from the pages of a graphic novel. Instead, it being shot on film in a 4:3 aspect ratio gives it an oddly sophisticated old movie quality, like something plucked from the archives of an enthusiast who’d wince at the idea of it one day being watched on someone’s smartphone.

Will there be a Season 2 of The Chosen One on Netflix?

At the time of writing Netflix have not officially renewed The Chosen One for a second season.
Since there’s an amount of goodwill around Mark Millar’s name, there’s every chance that the series will continue, though, especially since the first season doesn’t come anywhere close to rounding off the story. Instead, it really puts the pieces in play for a much wider-ranging conflict cribbed directly from the comics.
Of course, Netflix will still be interested in how the series performs. Given the sedate pace of its early-going, there’s a chance that some viewers might not make it to the big revelations at the season’s end, which would be a shame. However, the six-episode season order and binge-able runtimes should help with the show’s all-important completion rate, and fans of the source material will know to buckle in for the entire ride.
With the show being an overseas production it’s unlikely to be affected by the ongoing strikes, and given it’s basis in a comic series well-known to the West, it’s likely Netflix will see it as something of an easy win for the short-term future.
Our official prediction is that The Chosen One will be renewed for a second season, but we’ll update this page as soon as we know more.
