Summary

Mazel Tov — this coming-of-age classic comedy starring the Sandler family is the coolest teen rom-com of the year. A must-watch.

Here is our review of the 2023 Netflix movie You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah does not contain spoilers.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a Netflix teen comedy and tells the story of two best friends, Stacy and Lydia, who have always dreamed of having epic bat Mitzvahs.

However, things do not go as planned as a cute Jewish boy gets in the way and threatens not only their friendship but their right of passage. The film is based on Fiona Rosenbloom’s YA book, and Adam Sandler takes all the right turns to make this film a stellar adaptation.

There is also an insane amount of talent in the casting, including Idina Menzel, Sunny Sandler, Sadie Sandler, Adam Sandler, Jackie Sandler, Ido Mosseri, Luis Guzman, Sarah Sherman, Dan Bulla, Dylan Hoffman, and Samantha Lorraine. (This film shows that Nepotism works, and it helps if you’re all as talented as the Sandlers.)

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah Review and Plot Summary

When you think of Adam Sandler’s filmography, you will go to slap-stick outrageous comedy, my personal favourite being The Waterboy. However, in this film, he’s taking a back seat and letting his talented daughters take the comedy wheel for a spin.

Cleverly crafted, there is enough nostalgia in this film for parents and enough modern takes to entertain younger audiences. I am so happy to see a film that isn’t concerned with mobile phones and the internet, but something personal and relatable. It’s completely restored my faith in teen rom-coms and the future of the genre.

The honest humor comes from watching and learning about all the preparation, excitement, and angst that goes into being a young Jewish girl in America. Sunny Sandler does an excellent, convincing job and is effortless to watch on screen.

I was highly impressed with her acting skills — definitely one to watch, and I hope to see her in more comedy films in the future. The whole family has excellent chemistry, and their genuine laughter is infectious. My favorite character is Rabbi Rebecca — the quirky, singing Rabbi broke down all stereotypes for me, and I loved the energy that character brought to the film.

The bright, colorful cinematography is sure to be that dopamine hit you need, along with a solid soundtrack; this film will be one you can watch repeatedly and not get bored.

At its heart, this film is about a young girl’s transition into womanhood and the trials and tribulations that come with. At the end, all I wanted to do was go party at a bat mitzvah.

Is You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah good or bad?

Yes. This film is the cutest rom-com of the year. It has a funny and poignant coming-of-age story, with easily likable characters, cracking comedy, and is fun for the whole family.

I keep singing “God is random” randomly in my head throughout the day, so the film is memorable.

Is You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah worth watching?

Yes. Especially if you’re a fan of the comedy legend Adam Sandler. This film is a fun, family affair. Also, and a big thank you, the film has an appropriate runtime of one hour and forty-three minutes.
