Summary

We tempt you to watch this and not be instantly seduced. A real Casanova, seducing everything in his path. It is a story of romance and royal secrets.

Here is our review of the 2023 Netflix movie Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction, which does not contain significant spoilers.

Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction stars Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen, 1864) and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard (The Chestnut Man, The Rain) and is based on the novel Ehrengard by famed Danish author Karen Blixen (Out of Africa), who published it under the pen name of Isak Dinesen.

Set in the fairy tale kingdom of Babenhausen, the story surrounds a self-appointed expert on love who is hired to try to teach a timid prince the art of seduction in order to secure their family an heir.

However, the plan backfires, leading to the scandal of a child being conceived out of wedlock, and the royal family has to seek refuge in the castle of Rosebad and pretend the baby was born months later.

Here, an unexpected romance occurs when our love expert falls in love with Ehrengard, the princess’s maid, and sets a bet with the Grand Duchess that he can seduce her. If he can’t, he must sleep with the Grand Duchess. Win, win, really.

Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction Review and Plot Summary

The film features set design and costumes inspired by Queen Margrethe II, an honorary member of the Association of Danish Scenographers, and they are stunning to look at. Details such as these completely immerse you into that era.

To match, there are some stunning locations used, including freshly cut exquisite grounds of stunning stately homes. The whole film is very visually pleasing.

The sexual tension is immediate in the film, from little touches to glances to the grand Duchess snogging her painter Cazotte, and is instantly gripping and intriguing. Then we meet bright-eyed, beautiful, blond prince Lothar, who needs to produce an heir to secure the throne.

While the art of seduction on the prince is over quite quickly, it switches to seducing the people in order to keep the pregnancy a secret, then to Cazotte having to try new techniques to win an engaged maid to win her affection.

All actors have great chemistry, and romance and charisma ooze through the screen in every scene. The storyline is not complicated; it is easy to follow, understand, and perhaps predict, but the film does well in keeping you intrigued as a viewer.
