The Other Black Girl follows editorial assistant Nella Rogers, who feels alone at her job because she is the only Black woman working for her company. Her employer, Wagner Books, hires Hazel-May McCall, a fellow Black woman, which excites Nella.

As the duo begin to become friends, things go south when Hazel’s advice leads to Nella getting in trouble with her boss. Nella starts to unpack many secrets along the way and realizes there is more to Hazel than meets the eye.

Who is Shani in The Other Black Girl, and why is she important?

Early in the season, a stranger on the subway walked up to Nella to reveal that Hazel’s real name was Eva. Nella was very confused by the entire thing until later, it was revealed that the stranger was Shani, a former co-worker of Hazel’s. Shani worked with Hazel when she went by the name Eva, and Hazel tried to convince Shani to use the product. When Shani refused, Hazel attacked her, and Shani went on the run.

Later, we find out that Hazel had men looking for Shani ever since she was on the run. When she appeared in the town they were in, they captured her before she could tell Nella any more details about the secret organization’s plan.

Karina Willis plays Shani. She was born in Mission Viejo, California. She trained at Florida State University along with the Theatre Academy London.
