Summary
Allegiances begin to shift, but the show’s excellent aesthetics, editing, and action choreography continue to support the narrative’s slower moments capably.
It’s the morning after the night before, the night before Episode 4 of Song of the Bandits. To recap, the railway money was stolen by Eon-nyeoni and Hee-shin, and the latter managed to escape an assassination attempt by San-gun and Choraeng-yi, though admittedly only by avoiding a different assassination attempt.
Now, Yoon and his gang are in pursuit of both Eon-nyeoni and the money, and Hee-shin, while Gwang-il isn’t happy about the Japanese wanting to let Ki-ryong go for his useful contacts. After all, he didn’t know that someone had switched out the railway money, did he? And for that matter, neither did Gwang-il, so the Japanese are still looking for the dough.
It doesn’t take Yoon and the crew long to beat out some information about Eon-nyeoni. They learn she’s traveling by train with Hee-shin — whom they continue to know as just “the railway manager” — and that Eon-nyeoni was hired from within the railway. Given what was said earlier about Hee-shin’s emotions during her speech, they’re beginning to realize that she might just be on their side.
With this information, Yoon and the gang chase down the train that the women are traveling on and board it. Yoon confronts Hee-shin, but recognizes her immediately. When he pauses, the train begins to lurch to a halt, and Eon-nyeoni spots him, leading to yet another fight between the two.
In the chaos of everyone disembarking the train, Gwang-il, who has arrived with his men, recognizes Eon-nyeoni from when he hired her to kill Yoon and sends his goons to arrest her.
While this is going on, Yoon tries to speak with Hee-shin, but an enormous sandstorm rolls in and breaks up the entire party.
Who shoots Eon-nyeoni?
In the midst of the sandstorm, there’s some great-looking action as both Yoon and Eon-nyeoni take down multiple Japanese soldiers. However, Eon-nyeoni takes a bullet in the midst of the scuffle from Gwang-il, and the other bandits leave Yoon behind.
Gwang-il hangs Eun-nyeoni from a rope and interrogates her. He’s especially concerned about why Yoon is still alive, despite her having been paid to kill him five years ago. He insists that she complete this mission and bring him Yoon’s head, or she and people she cares about will die.
Why does Yoon help Hee-shin?
Yoon is able to find Hee-shin and save her from bandits. After holding her at gunpoint — she doesn’t seem to recognize him — and forcing her to admit she’s a double agent working for Korea’s independence, he fights off some bandits and agrees to take her over two miles south to a train station that is the secondary rendezvous with the intended recipient of the stolen money, which she insists will secure the futures of Joseon people.
Yoon and Hee-shin bond a little as they travel, but they remain very cagey. The latter claims to have chosen to risk her life to fight for independence so she can pass her land onto her ancestors, as her ancestors did for her. Yoon remains rather noncommital on the matter, and when Hee-shin asks him if they’ve ever met before, he says they haven’t.
How does Song of the Bandits season 1, episode 5 end?
At the end of the episode, Eun-nyeoni shows up with Yoon’s bickering gang, who are debating how to find him and fighting among themselves.
Meanwhile, Hee-shin and Yoon make it to the rendezvous, but it turns out to be an ambush. There’s a bit of a shootout, and Hee-shin takes a bullet in the crossfire. Yoon immediately straps her aboard his horse and sets off at quite a clip, trying to find her aid before she slips away.
