10 Best Anime Shows from Summer 2023

10. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023)

If this blast from the past sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Despite the 1996 version already being a fan-favorite among shounen lovers, this remake breathes fresh new life into the beloved classic while introducing it to the new generation. While the premise remains the same, the updates to the animation and overall story help to modernize the series a bit.

MAL Score: 7.73

9. Undead Murder Farce

Based on the popular manga Undead Girl Murder Farce, this series is set in a world where supernatural creatures like vampires are common. After the wife of a vampire noble is murdered, supernatural detective Tsugaru Shinuchi is hired to solve the case. It’s the perfect watch for fans who like a side of the supernatural with their detective stories.

MAL Score: 7.89

8. My Happy Marriage

This anime was one of the most unexpected hits of the season, taking a relatively unrecognized property and elevating it to peak status. With its mix of supernatural elements and romance, this is one of the more unique fantasy dramas to come along this year. It has a phenomenal sub and dub for fans who may prefer to watch the series in English.

MAL Score: 8.02

7. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

With his hilarious jokes about the workforce, amusing art style, and relatable characters, Zom 100 is easily one of the most entertaining animes of the season. Although plagued with scheduling conflicts, this series is still a must-watch for fans of satire, comedy, and, of course, the undead, as it takes a unique spin on the zombie trope and overworking culture.

MAL Score: 8.14

6. BanG Dream! It’s MyGo!!!!!

As another installment in the popular BanG Dream music franchise, this season follows Anon Chihaya as she attempts to fulfill her dream of creating her own band. Fans of the previous seasons will enjoy the cast of MyGo and how the series depicts realistic drama while not losing the spark that makes the show special.

MAL Score: 8.21

5. Horimiya: The Missing Pieces

In this unique follow-up to Horimiya, the season goes back, animating scenes that did not make the cut for season one. It’s a very different approach, but it proved to be the right one, as fans were excited to see more content from Hori and her friends.

MAL Score: 8.29

4. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2

Although many viewers are often torn on the main character’s provocative nature, there’s no denying that this series is one of better isekai’s currently airing. Season 2 proved to be a solid follow-up to the excitement and hilarity of the previous season while continuing to explore the aftermath of the Teleportation Incident.

MAL Score: 8.46

3. Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5

While Bungo Stray Dogs has always done well among fans, the last two seasons have been proof that things only get better with age. The fifth season continues the Armed Detective Agency’s quest to prove their innocence, adapting the series far enough to catch up with the manga.

MAL Score: 8.72

2. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

After a stellar first season and movie, this was easily one of the most highly anticipated returns of 2023. The Gojo’s Past Arc proved to be one of the best of the series so far, and the Shibuya Incident Arc is already off to a commendable start as well.

MAL Score: 8.82

1. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Separation

After a hiatus that spanned almost 10 years, Bleach returned to high praise from anime fans and critics alike. This season continues where part one left off, continuing Ichigo Kurosaki’s journey from starting from volume 61 of the manga.

MAL Score: 8.96
