Who is Doug Summers in Totally Killer? Character Explained

Totally Killer is a Prime Video horror-comedy that has been labeled a mix of Back to the Future and Halloween. We have plenty of other articles covering every aspect of the movie, but first of all, take the weight off your feet for two minutes and read this one focusing on one of the film’s characters, Doug Summers.

The mixing of horror and comedy is almost as old as film itself, and if you are of a certain age you will remember classics such as Abbot and Costello meets The Wolf Man, and pretty much every other Universal monster, but the genre would continue from the 40s right to the present day with classics such as Carry on Screaming, Young Frankenstein, Saturday the 14th, Scary Movie, Bubba Ho-Tep and The Blackening.

If you are a fan of this kind of thing, you will no doubt be interested in Totally Killer, which mixes the genres and has a brilliant hook of sending the protagonist back to the 80s in an attempt to stop a serial killer.

The ensemble cast gives it their all, embracing the silliness of the concept with the violence that you would expect from a film that features “The Sweet Sixteen Killer”, a masked psychopath named for stabbing his victims sixteen times with a knife.

Major spoilers lie ahead. If you have not watched the film and would like to, stop reading now.

Young Doug Summers is a bit of a loner at school, often overlooked and bullied at the school where the original killings took place. It is revealed that Doug was the original Sweet Sixteen Killer.

He was in love with Trish who died in a car accident after leaving a friend’s house during a sleepover. Trish had been upset when her friend had accused her of sleeping with a coach at the school, and although she had been drinking, she tried to drive home resulting in a crash that killed her.

Ironically, Doug would grow up to be the principal at the school.

Who plays Doug Summers (teen and adult) in Totally Killer?

The two actors who play Doug are Nathaniel Appiah and Conrad Coates.

Young Doug is played by Nathaniel, and old Doug by Conrad.

What movies and TV shows are Nathaniel Appiah and Conrad Coates best known for?

Nathaniel started his career by appearing in a few shorts in 2016. After being noticed, he would appear in an episode of Late Night in the Studio in 2020.

In 2021, he would earn a place in the series American Gods, and in 2022 another episode would come his way in the series Ghosts. It looks as if Totally Killer is his first major feature film, and that gets you up to speed with Nathaniel.

Conrad has had a very long and successful acting career starting way back in 1989 with the TV series version of War of the Worlds. He would find consistent work right through the nineties in shows such as Street Legal, Tek War and Earth: Final Conflict.

In the 2000s Conrad would star in TV movies and series such as Relic Hunter, These Arms of Mine, La Femme Nikita, The Zack Files, Slings and Arrows, as well as TV movies such as Gospel of Deceit, Solar Strike, and How She Move, before even more TV work on episodes of classics such as The Dresden Files, Kyle XY, and Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Conrad just seems to work and work and is one of those actors you seem to see in everything but has never really had a huge lead in a major motion picture.

He would continue to work through the 2010s in shows such as Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Saving Hope, The Strain, Defiance, and Star Trek: Discovery, before hitting the 2020s with appearances in Jupiter’s Legacy, The Expanse, and In The Dark.

It would have probably been easier to list what he has not been in.

Conrad must be considered to be a safe pair of hands as far as roles go, and we hope he eventually gets a big break in a theatrically released big-budget movie.
