Summary
“Breakthrough” once again highlights the difference in quality between the individual storylines. There is tense action in Aneesha’s subplot and further visual treats in Mitsuki’s, but Jamila’s storyline continues to be hampered by painful dialogue and a rather odd teen love triangle. The show also relies too heavily on easy answers to all of its many dilemmas.
The separate storylines start to converge and characters from different continents finally meet with one another in Episode 9 of Invasion’s second season, “Breakthrough.”
The Apple TV+ series moves ever closer to its second season finale, in this, the penultimate episode. Aneesha and the Movement search for Sarah, whilst Caspar and Mitsuki make some real progress with their own separate missions. Our recap naturally contains major spoilers for the entire episode.
Invasion Season 2 Episode 9 Recap
We begin with President Benya at the WDC (the World Defense Coalition). The scientists have analyzed the data from the earthquakes and have discovered that there are even more aliens hiding on Earth than first suspected. Their ships are cloaked and the scientists believe that the aliens are potentially making themselves invisible as well.

Benya asks to speak with Mitsuki, but the heroine is still trying to decipher the alien’s language. Mitsuki hears Hinata’s voice and follows these whispers outside into the surrounding rainforest. Here she starts to understand the connections, seeing glowing light exuding from all of nature. She remembers Caspar too, believing that he is the key to defeating the aliens.
Caspar is on another continent though, recovering in France. He saw a light and was then attacked by the aliens in his own mind. The children conclude that this light must be important if the aliens are protecting it. Caspar asks to be put under once more so that he can find the location of this unique place.
Why is Jamila worried about Caspar?
The doctors and Jamila worry that it is far too dangerous to go under again though. Esmee suggests speaking with the WDC before making any further plans. The fears of Caspar slipping into another coma are still fresh in their minds.
Esmee speaks with the WDC, leaving the children to discuss their options alone. Jamila asks to go under with Caspar, to help her friend stay tethered to the real world. Monty, who loves Jamila, doesn’t want her getting hurt though. This turns into another heated debate between Monty and Caspar. Regardless of their feelings for one another, the WDC gives the go-ahead. Caspar is to go under once more.
In the other main subplot, the Movement head to the military base, where Sarah is being kept captive. Scientists are running tests on Sarah, probing her about the alien artifact, which is referred to as the shard. Sarah states that her brother Luke can communicate with the item.
The Movement orchestrate their plan, entering the base with a hostage. Luke senses Sarah and the alien artifact nearby as they enter the site. They draw out the enemy soldiers with gunfire and explosions. This gives Aneesha and Clark the chance to break in unseen.
How do Trevante and Rose escape?
Aneesha and Clark quickly find Trevante and Rose locked up in the base’s prison. Trevante offers to help them find Sarah if he is freed. He tells them that Sarah is in the medical wing. Aneesha frees them from their cell. They are then shot at by soldiers as they escape. Trevante distracts them, whilst Aneesha heads to the medical wing alone.
Unfortunately, Sarah has already been moved, but Aneesha soon finds her daughter anyway. Aneesha calls out to Sarah in Farsi and grabs her, heading straight towards the exit. They are captured as soon as they leave the building though. Trevante and Rose work their way through the base, finding the zombie abductees. Rose finds her husband Billy hooked up to a machine, in a trance-like state.

Audiences then return to Caspar’s storyline. The friends agree that Jamila should not be put under. Caspar returns to the other side on his lonesome. At the very same time, Mitsuki unearths a glowing root under the ground. She holds these connective roots tight and transports to the other side herself.
