Summary

A lazy dream-sequence episode is saved by a cameo, which is short-lived but impactful. The Gen V saga continues.

Episode 6 of the quirky teen drama series Gen V Season 1 opens with foul language and interrogation with a desperate Cate trying to explain herself. It’s a short episode, with a runtime of just 37 minutes, however, its pace feels more steady and less disjointed than the previous outings.

With only two episodes to go in this first season, by now each character’s arcs and the overarching plot could have been stronger. The first three episodes were focused on character building, and these next three seemed more aimed at the plot. However, going from memory loss to a dream sequence doesn’t allow the plot to move forward. If anything this episode is a cathartic release for the characters and hopefully, it leads to something more substantial in the final two episodes.

Gen V Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

At this point, only Emma’s and Cate’s powers have been explored, and plenty of mini-story potentials such as Andre’s relationship with his father have been left alone. Marie and Dean Shetty’s relationship is weak, so after six episodes, it’s easy to wonder why we should still be watching this series. However, the storyline around the virus is compelling and the theme around this sixth episode is intriguing.

Also, once a supernatural character comes in the mix, the show’s shift changes. We’re all watching this series for cameos and finally, we get a good one. There is also a sensitive turned comedic sex scene, where we see a certain Sammy lose his virginity.

Now the gang is aware of Cate’s betrayal, Emma goes to find Sam whilst Marie, Jordan, and Andre are forced to see things from Cate’s perspective. This episode is mostly about Cate — who she is, where she came from, her powers, the tragedy of her brother, and her relationship with Dean Shetty.

Dr. Cardosa makes a breakthrough with a mysterious virus, and Shetty makes a terrifying request with dire consequences.

Whose side is Cate on?

The matter of where Cate’s allegiances truly are remains elusive for now, though we’re continuing to learn more as we go.

In Episode 5 we learned that Cate was the one who wiped everyone’s memories and was wiping Luke’s to forget his brother Sam over and over again. In Episode 6, she is remorseful and makes claims against Vought. Whilst the episode explores her life, her motives and alliance remain unclear.

What does Dean Shetty really want?

Dean Shetty’s character has been slightly shady from the start. We know she’s got ulterior motives, and being the Dean of the university, she’s involved in the secrets that have been unveiled across the last five episodes.

The Dean had befriended Marie, trying to keep her close, keeping her top five ranking students well looked after. In this episode, we learn her deeper, scarier motives behind The Woods, and the experiments going on there.

Gen V Season 1 Episode 6 Ending Explained

Towards the end of the episode, we learn a lot more about our characters as their secrets are exposed to one another and there’s a lot of judgements thrown around.

The group is trying to help Cate and give her a chance at retribution — it’s predictable and lackluster. Emma and Sam enter and Sam tries to attack Cate, and the others fight him to protect her. He fights them off, but Emma talks him down, like Agent Romanov to Bruce Banner. Cate awakens from her dream state and reveals all of Dean Shetty’s secrets.

The episode ends with Dean Shetty in The Woods, and we see a side of her we’ve all feared

This ending line is one of the strongest in the series, and it’s easy to wish this intensity and intrigue had been in the earlier episodes.
