Summary
“Rescue Mission” showcases Upload’s charming side with some fun, playful segments. It also works effectively to do some nifty plot building as the conspiracy opens up as we enter the second half of the season, leading to a shocking cliffhanger ending.
Prime Video’s sci-fi comedy series Upload Season 3 returns with another double-bill of installments. We start off this double release with Episode 5, “Rescue Mission.” In the latest installment, the two Nathans team up to save Luke’s life, whilst Nora uncovers a horrifying truth about Dr Ari Kapoor.

Upload Season 3 Episode 5 Recap
“Rescue Mission” opens with Luke inviting the AI Guy to go on an adventure with him to the Grey Zone. This innocent request is of course an excuse for Luke to trade in the AI Guy for a reward. The AI Guy transforms into a coconut so he can sneak out of Lakeview undetected.
Meanwhile, Nora struggles to adjust to living with Nathan’s ex-girlfriend Holden. The ex’s dog accidentally digests some of Nathan’s new pills and Holden is forced to take them to the vets. Nora urges Nathan to go to the hospital himself, but Luke calls first, interrupting their chat. Luke is locked up in a prison in the Grey Zone and needs their immediate help.
Why is Luke locked up?
A quick flashback reveals that Luke got cold feet selling the AI Guy and ended up in a cell after upsetting the gangsters he was supposed to be negotiating with. While Luke and Nathan are chatting, the backup copy of Nathan calls, confusing matters further.
The backup Nathan is hurt to hear that he has been cloned, but no one has the heart to tell him the truth, that he is in fact the clone. Ingrid refuses to be the bearer of bad news and swiftly exits from Lakeview. The real Nathan promises to explain everything in person though. They agree to meet in the Grey Zone, where duplicates can interact.
While Nathan finds a way into the Grey Zone, Nora is tasked with collecting backup Nathan. She secretly loves the fact that there are two Nathans now and hugs backup Nathan on her arrival back in Lakeview. Nora takes the copy straight to the Grey Zone. Ingrid spies on them as they catch up in the lobby, she’s jealous of their chemistry.
What is Aleesha’s new project?
Elsewhere, Aleesha is given another project to spearhead. Karina and Lucy want to experiment with a downloaded version of the AI Guy, placing him into the real world. Aleesha is tasked with guiding this AI clone through New York City. This proves difficult, as the AI Guy keeps walking into traffic and acting strangely.
Back in the Grey Zone, Nora tells backup Nathan that he is the clone and she is in a relationship with the other Nathan. Both Nathans are then introduced to one another. The Nathans actually bond with each other, performing an impromptu, synchronized dance.

Nora decides to go and get Nathan more pills after the dog ate most of them, leaving the two Nathans to go and save Luke together. On their journey through the Grey Zone, they discuss Nora. Backup Nathan is clearly saddened that he is not with Nora. He does however state that he is happy with Ingrid though.
The two Nathans pretend to be AIs and ask to make a trade with the gangster in the Grey Zone for Luke’s life. Luke is elated to see the Nathans come to his rescue, but their plan goes terribly. The gangster sees straight through their lies.
How do the two Nathans free Luke?
The real Nathan offers the gangster the backup Nathan without hesitation in another trade-off. This is just a trick though. Real Nathan pretends to be the backup copy. The deal goes ahead and Luke is freed. As soon as the real Nathan is thrown in jail, he just exits the virtual reality, taking off his goggles to escape with ease. Backup Nathan’s plan works a treat. All three of the friends are then reunited in a safe part of the Grey Zone.
How does Upload Season 3 Episode 5 end?
Back in the real world, Nora is told by Holden that Nathan’s pills aren’t anything special, just ordinary medicine used to help with flatulence. Nora is shocked by this revelation. She goes to confront Dr Kapoor but finds a stranger in his house. Panicked by a shifty-looking man lurking in the home, Nora bails.
She is soon chased by this mysterious man down the street though. Nora runs away but is cornered by even more thugs. Just as they are about to attack her, Nora blacks out. She then wakes up in Lakeview. Has she been uploaded to the digital world? Has Nora been killed? The episode concludes with this cliffhanger ending.
