Ferry: The Series is a spin-off from the popular crime drama Undercover, and takes place before the events of that show. The first season explores the character’s rise to power, becoming a drug lord, and establishing himself as a powerful and dangerous figure, embroiled in a life of crime and becoming a notorious and oddly charismatic figure. It seems fans of Undercover just can’t get enough of Ferry Bouman, and viewers are wondering if there are any more revelations to come from the darkly comedic past of this intriguing antagonist. Season 2, anyone?
Though things might seem complicated enough — the series is a prequel to Undercover but also a sequel to the Netflix film Ferry — there is every chance of more to come.
Has Ferry: The Series been renewed for Season 2?
At the time of writing, Ferry: The Series has not been renewed for a second season.
Of course, it is still early days for the series, and Netflix will no doubt be waiting for all the data to arrive before they even consider another season of the show. But at the heart of the issue, there may be a more obvious answer.
With Ferry: The Series exploring the backstory of the character, it may just be that the story that the creators of the show wanted to tell has reached a natural conclusion, and no further material is required. The show was billed as a miniseries bridging the gap between Ferry and Undercover. With fans of the latter being the primary driver of engagement in what is otherwise quite an obscure property, if the spin-off has essentially caught up to the flagship series, well… things have to end somewhere.
It’s also worth noting that even Undercover wasn’t an especially successful series for Netflix, though it did seem to improve over time, with the third season breaking into the top ten in 23 countries, according to Netflix Top 10. Like previous seasons, though, it only stayed there a week, implying that the universe overall doesn’t have a tremendous amount of longevity. It’s very unlikely that Ferry: The Series, being a prequel to this series, will outperform it.
What can we expect from Ferry: The Series Season 2?
In all honesty, there is a chance that if another season is green-lit, the writers may struggle to find more things to say about the character.
There is always a danger in taking a strong premise and expanding it beyond its natural life span. Doing this can dilute the original material, and retroactively spoil the original concept of the character by overbaking the cake, making it indigestible for the fan base.
There may be an argument that a second season of the show could provide us with more content featuring the character and supporting cast, but for true fans, this could be interpreted as just a cash grab, stretching out a format to pander to viewers, and sacrificing natural creativity for manufactured and cheap entertainment.
Many series suffer from the continued need to keep producing more content using their intellectual properties, which eventually suffer from a lack of quality. More does not necessarily mean better, and often some of the most well-loved shows become maligned by the need of corporations to continue to return to the well, usually with diminishing returns.
Some of the most beloved TV series we know only have one or two seasons, with the story reaching a conclusion, and going out on a high.
As far as the writers on Ferry go, it does seem that the show was conceived to tie up a lot of loose ends and provide a conclusion of sorts for this period in Ferry’s life. That suggests that as far as they are concerned, the objectives of the show have been met.
