Summary
The premiere of The Buccaneers serves as a well-structured lay of the land with the promise of things to come. Far from perfect, but it left me wanting more.
Love is in the air in the premiere episode of the Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers. As Conchita is ready to get married, her bridesmaids are heading to England with her to the Debutante ball to be presented in front of the Queen and potentially find their husbands. In Episode 1 we’re primarily introduced to the character of Nan St. George, played by the lovely Kristine Froseth.
A lot is going on in this introductory episode, but it’s well-structured enough — despite leaping back and forth across continents — to keep the viewer engaged and do a decent job of laying the character and narrative groundwork for subsequent episodes. It isn’t perfect, but it does the most essential job of a pilot, which is making the viewer want to watch more.
The Buccaneers Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
Conchita is freaking out because it is her wedding day, and her husband is nowhere to be found. She accidentally drops a charm out of the window, and Nan storms out to get it for Conchita before the wedding unfolds.
Richard finally arrives at the wedding but tries to give Nan a letter. His parents have told him that they don’t want him marrying Conchita. However, Nan explains how much Conchita loves him, and she knows that Nick loves her equally as much. He explains that she is right and will marry her today.
Does Lord Richard marry Conchita?
Yes, after the talk with Nan and realizing how much he loves Conchita, Richard arrives at the wedding and says I do to Conchita, and the two are now married.
Outside the wedding, Nan runs into a man she is pretty smitten by. The two share a little witty banter, leading to Nan asking for his name and wondering who he is. He says his name is Guy and is off to go home, where his mother is sick.
Where does Lady Brightlingsea invite Mrs. St. George and Conchita’s bridesmaids?
Richard, per the request of Lady Brightlingsea, invites Mrs. St. George and Conchita’s bridesmaids to London to be presented at the Debutante ball before the Queen. The young ladies who aren’t married can meet potential suitors looking for a wife. Of course, Mrs. St. George and the ladies are excited to escape New York and enter this new world.
As Lord Richard predicted, Conchita struggles to adapt to the English lifestyle, making him frustrated. He talks to Nan about it and tells her he isn’t sure it will last because all this is happening in front of his parents.
Nan St. George is struggling with the Debutante ball because all the men treat women like objects. She goes to storm off when she runs into Guy again, who is shocked to see her. The duo share a moment, but when Nan accidentally drops her heel off the balcony, it lands right into the cake.
How does The Buccaneers Episode 1 end and what secret does Jinny reveal to Nan?
Jinny isn’t thrilled that Nan has taken the spotlight away from her again. She heads outside to confront her about it and lays into her about everything she does and how their mother always rushes to defend her. In the middle of being heated, she reveals to Nan that Mrs. St. George isn’t her mother as she was a result of an affair their father had.
With her actions continuing to cause a stir, they choose to send Nan back to New York. Before she is off back to the States, we see her dip into the ocean, and when she gets out, she runs into Theo, Duke of Tintagel. The two share a little moment, but she informs him that she is heading back to the States, which he says is a shame.
