Summary

Who thought being forced to spend Christmas with your frenemy could be so much fun? A classic, cheesy, cheerful Christmas movie for all the family.

Holiday movie season is among us, and what do we love more than cheesy romantic comedies with simple acting and straightforward storylines? Probably a lot, but ‘tis the season for Christmas films, and the touching and jolly Netflix film Best. Christmas. Ever! is one to add to your list.

Best. Christmas. Ever! is the heartwarming comedy starring Brandy Norwood and Heather Graham. The story follows Jackie, who every year at Christmas sends a braggy, boastful newsletter (with words like splendiferous in it) to her long-time, humbler, and more basic friend Charlotte. A twist of fate then brings Charlotte to Jackie’s doorstep. As a result, Charlotte makes it her mission to prove that her friend’s life is not perfect.

The film is directed by Mary Lambert who also directed A Castle for Christmas, and the storyline of two long-life frenemies coming together and having a conflict of Christmas is a very fun premise.

Best. Christmas. Ever! review and plot summary

Whilst the storyline is simply driven by a jealous friend, it’s strong enough to carry the film and with the runtime short at one hour and twenty minutes, the film does well to not be dragged out.

Norwood shines as the generous and incredibly kind Jackie Jennings, her cheesy, flirty, and overly enthusiastic disposition contrasting with the more hard-hitting, jealous Charlotte (Graham). Both actresses complement each other so well and have excellent chemistry on screen. Graham is picture-perfect Hallmark movie candy, with her beauty and ability to deliver compelling acting, no matter the content.

Charlotte’s husband Rob Sanders is played by Jason Biggs (American Pie, Orange is the New Black) and does a stellar job as a supporting role, helping drive the comedy along through his jolly naivety.

As the film continues Charlotte’s jealousies get the better of her and she tries to sabotage her frenemy by proving her life isn’t perfect. This drives a wedge between them, and her and her husband. Then Charlotte has to figure out how to put aside her complicated feelings about Jackie and get into the holiday spirit.

Charlotte comes across as spoilt, mean, and jealous, and as the film continues she is on a journey of self-love, self-discovery, and self-acceptance, and needs to find the Christmas spirit. The film teaches us to stop comparing ourselves to others and be grateful for what we have.

Is Best. Christmas. Ever! a good holiday movie?

With a hopeful and fun ending, this Christmas film is a pleasure to watch. Unlike many, this is one you could watch each year, especially if you’re feeling a little grumpy and looking for some humbling cheer.

Christmas films should be filled with magic, hope, and all the trimming and traditions to get you in the holiday spirit. Best. Christmas. Ever! does this with its colorful sets, intense decorations, huge snowfalls, and family traditions. It’s a great Holiday movie to get you ready for Christmas.
