Summary
“This Missive, This Machination!” was a filler episode that checks some boxes but was a massive step back from the first two installments. The finale needs to end on a high note, or otherwise what was built will fall flat.
Mark is off to college in Episode 3 of the Prime Video series Invincible Season 2. As Mark tries to adjust, Debbie struggles to adapt to life alone by heading to a Spouses of Superheroes meeting. Of course, when things begin to be normal, a planet is under attack, and Mark is their only hope of survival, leading to him leaving everything behind.
After the premiere and Episode 2, this feels like a real step down and puts next week’s Part 1 finale in the unenviable position of having to play catch up with the momentum, established by the earlier episodes.
Invincible Season 2 Episode 3 Recap
Debbie is dropping off Mark at college and gets a little emotional. She gives him the pep talk that it has been rough for quite a while, but she wants him to thrive. Mark promises he can be home in a second if she needs him.
Mark returns to his dorm room, and his roommate already has a sock on the door. So he heads to Amber’s room to talk to her about it, leading to their own good time with her roommate not arriving until tomorrow.
Debbie arrives at a Spouses of Superheroes meeting, which is set up like an AA meeting. In her first meeting, she doesn’t speak up, and after it is over, Theo, a man who spoke in the meeting, approaches her to talk about it and invites her to drinks with their fellow members.
Who is Allen the Alien?
Although he briefly appeared in Season 1 of Invincible, we find out that Allen is a Champion Evaluation Officer for the Coalition of Planets. His job was to find someone to help with the incoming attacks on the planet. He returned to speak to the Coalition about his discovery of Mark and how he is part Viltrumite and can help them.
Allen breaks down that Mark doesn’t realize he is Viltrumite, but it’s not bad because he is one of the good guys. While the Coalition says that they can’t trust Viltrumite, Allen fights back, stating that Mark isn’t like the rest and will be able to help them fight back.
What mission does Thaedus send Allen on?
After the big meeting, Thaedus pulled Allen aside to talk to him about how the Viltrumite attacking shortly after joining them raised some suspicion. So he enlists Allen to find out who is the mole amongst the Coalition.
Allen returned home from his mission to his excited girlfriend Telia, who hadn’t seen him in a while. The duo made some quick love, and Allen told Telia that there was a mole amongst the Coalition and Thaedus put him in charge of finding out. However, as they talk, the Viltrumites attack him leaving him for dead to find out details regarding Mark.
How does Invincible Season 2 Episode 3 end?
An alien from Thraxa has appeared at Mark’s school to inform him that their planet needs his help. Hesitant at first, Mark pushes for more answers, and he explains that they are on the verge of being attacked and have heard all of these fantastic things about him and know that Mark can help them save the planet.
We see William enter the fold to explain that he must go on this mission because the last time he didn’t help someone, they both regretted it. On his way to the ship, Mark calls Cecil to inform him that he is heading to Thraxa, and Cecil orders him not to. Mark explains he has no choice and hangs up on Cecil. At the end of the episode, we see Mark arriving at Thraxa, where things seem normal until he hears the voice of his dad.
