Summary

An impactful and frantic episode delivers more unpleasant imagery and developments as various plots begin to intersect and overlap.

All roads must converge, and in Episode 3 of Sweet Home Season 2, they converge on Bamseom. There’s all sorts going on over there, from Ui-myeong sneakily healing, to Yi-kyung being reunited with her fiancé, to Lim playing hardball with the Prime Minister about the vaccines. (You’ll recall I told you in Episode 2 that he wouldn’t be forthcoming on that matter!)

It’s nice to see things coming together – and then obviously falling apart – but this is a pretty damn bleak episode with some rather unsettling imagery and developments, and while I’m not one for trigger warnings and such, viewer discretion is advised I guess?

Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

Anyway, Su-yeong’s dead. The surviving Green Home residents all make it to the shelter, where Ho-sang the hitchhiker is slapped around a bit. There’s a simple system of people being cut and tagged, and if their cut heals instantly they’re immediately quarantined. Ji-su is still pretty wavy from her encounter with Jae-hwan, but all the survivors are welcomed into the shelter.

How is the shelter destroyed?

This feeling of relative “safety” is deliberately juxtaposed with all kinds of madness going on behind the scenes involving the lab, the military, and the Prime Minister. Sergeant Tak is followed by a rumor that he killed his own family, and Kim warns one of his subordinates that the truth of the rumor isn’t really the concern. The fact that Tak seems capable of having done it is more than enough.

And death very much follows Tak here. General Han shoots himself rather than open up to Tak, and quite shortly after Tak breaks into the lab and shoots the Prime Minister. But that’s a good thing in the grand scheme since the PM had ordered bombs to decimate the lab and the shelter with Lim’s manic endorsement.

What happens to the Prime Minister?

Even though Tak, Kim, and the soldiers manage to stop the bombing, the ordnance that did fall nonetheless sends the shelter spiraling into outright chaos, leading to a stampede and the separation of the former Green Home residents. It is also revealed that the PM himself is a monster, but he’s put down and burned by the soldiers before he can do any more damage.

There’s likewise chaos in the lab itself. UI-myeong frees all the monsters from their cells and then gets into it with Hyun-su, the latter plagued by a serious case of heroic do-gooderism that leaves him, in this instance, literally petrified.

How does Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 3 end?

A lot of the bleak stuff I mentioned – if you don’t count scenes of complete social disaster being bleak, which of course you should, but I’m sure you know what I mean – comes towards the end of the episode. Once Yi-kyung’s waters break on a frozen lake you know we’re in for something quite miserable, and the assumption is proved correct from when she wakes from a cold plunge and discovers her child, a monster, feasting hungrily on its own umbilical cord.

Ji-su also seems to die, crushed under falling debris while skewered in place, a tearful Eun-yu watching all the while. The displaced military and survivors converge on a nearby stadium, which they learn is already occupied but can accommodate them, though given how long their previous experience with shelter lasted, one must worry about their immediate futures.
