When a former government assistant turned father of three has his picture posted on social media, he comes face to face with his past while trying to save his family. Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan star in The Family Plan, an action comedy written by David Coggeshall and directed by Simon Cellan Jones. The film’s ending finds Dan in a race against time to save both the world and his family, leading to some predictable outcomes but impressive execution.

The Family Plan Ending Explained
How do the assassins find Dan?
In the movie’s early stages, Dan works his regular dad job with his wife and three kids. When he wins salesman of the month again, they attempt to take a picture of him to post on the walls, but he always makes an excuse. Later, when Dan and his wife Jessica celebrate their anniversary, a group of kids take a picture of the duo kissing. When he tells them to delete the photo, he uploads it to social media. As a result, the assassins can track Dan down. This leads to him taking his family on the run to Las Vegas to hide until they can get passports.

After coming face to face with the villains chasing after him, Dan is forced to tell his family about his past. His wife Jessica doesn’t take the news well and tells Dan she is taking the kids out of Dodge. However, when she arrives at the airport, Jessica runs into Gwen, who she thought was a friend but was hired to hunt down Dan.
Who is the man after Dan?
After the big reveal that Gwen was trying to get to Dan, we meet McCaffrey, who decides to use Dan’s wife and kids as leverage. McCaffrey gets Dan to agree to meet him, and it’s revealed that McCaffrey is Dan’s father. He has been hunting for him because he wants Dan to come back and work for him.
Does Dan save his family from his past?
Dan agrees to work for his father in exchange for him letting his family go. Along the way, Kyle pleads with his mother for them to return and help their father, and she finally agrees. They all work together to free Dan from Gwen but quickly realize an entire team is after him.

With the help of his son using a drone, Dan is able to take on the onslaught of henchmen his father hired to take him down. McCaffrey tells Gwen to find his grandson, who is running the drone. Jessica and Gwen battle with each other until Jessica kills Gwen.
McCaffrey gets the best of his son, but the family comes to the rescue before he can pull the trigger. The slight distraction lets Dan get the best of his dad, knocking him down. With Dan’s ability to take down his father and his henchmen, the family walks out of the building, and Dan can now live his life in peace as a husband and a father.
