Summary
The romance between the leads takes centre stage here in a highly romantic and effective chapter.
Halfway through its run as of Episode 8, My Demon continues to prove itself a can’t-miss and virtually fat-free example of romantic K-Drama. And the word “romantic” especially applies to this outing, where the chemistry between the leads is the most significant factor. This is by far the most impactful episode when it comes to developing the relationship between Gu-won and Do-hee and should allow Season 1’s back half to lean into this dynamic.
Meanwhile, the fantastical and mystery elements remain well-balanced and woven engagingly into the character-driven narrative, so there’s a great deal to like and little evidence that the show is going to slow down or depreciate in quality any time soon.
My Demon Season 1 Episode 8 Recap
Picking up from where we left off in Episode 7, things aren’t looking especially good for our leads. Gu-won has been stabbed by Gwang-chol and Do-hee has been arrested for murdering Madam Ju.
Luckily, Gu-won is saved by Bok-gyu, and in the commotion, half of Gwang-chol’s mask falls off, revealing his face to Gu-won. Equally luckily, Do-hee has an ally at the police station in the form of Detective Kyung-soo, who knows she’s innocent and helps her sneak out after she hears of Gu-won’s stabbing. Seok-hoon drives her to the hospital.
Escaping police custody
Gu-won isn’t in a great state, having lost a lot of blood and had his heart valves damaged, but his demon powers help soften things a little bit. He’s pleased to see Do-hee, though Ga-young isn’t since she blames her for what happened, and Seok-hoon isn’t pleased that Gu-won is pleased. Nevertheless, despite being weakened, Gu-won will survive. Do-hee, with Seok-hoon’s help, sneaks back into custody.
When Do-hee’s arrest is dismissed, she returns to the hospital, where Ga-young has been forced to come to terms with the authenticity of Gu-won and Do-hee’s relationship after listening to the former repeat the latter’s name in his sleep all night. Bok-gyu is being bossed around, and the mafia are outside the room for protection. Gu-won is, again, glad to see her. His near-death experience seems to have made him more romantic, and after the attack, public opinion is swaying back in favor of Do-hee.
Married life gets tested
Do-hee and Gu-won continue to enjoy married life, using Gu-won’s need to recharge as an excuse to cuddle. However, he’s still nursing some anxieties about his potential combustion, the loss of his powers, and what he believes is his gradual transition into becoming human. A stressed-out Ga-young also brings some negativity to the situation, calling Do-hee selfish for using Gu-won, confronting him about how he really feels about Do-hee, and feeding his anxieties that his marriage is contributing to his decline.
This kerfuffle also seeds doubt in Do-hee’s mind. When she’s unable to sleep, she stands on the balcony and expresses her frustrations to Madam Ju’s ghost, stuck between her desire for revenge and her increasing need to protect Gu-won by not exposing him to further dangers, which Ga-young had accused her of. She calls Seok-hoon and tells him there’s something they need to discuss.#
Why does Do-hee withdraw her candidacy?
The next day, Do-hee withdraws candidacy for chairwoman to the great surprise of Gu-won and the obvious excitement of the family members. She blames her withdrawal on Gu-won’s inability to protect her. While they argue, Do-gyeong texts Gwang-chol, who has spent the episode hiding and fearing for his life, that Gu-won’s powers are faulty.
Of course, we know that Do-hee withdrew to protect Gu-won, which Seok-hoon – who wasn’t present for the announcement – reveals to him later.
How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 8 end?
After hearing this, Gu-won immediately tracks down Do-hee in Madam Ju’s garden and tells her that he doesn’t care about the risks he’ll face in continuing to be involved with her. They kiss, with the garden’s sprinklers in full effect for that classically dramatic picture-postcard look. Gu-won is fully committed to Do-hee at this point and willing to risk everything to be with her, even if it means turning into a human.
