Summary

My Demon delivers a satisfying – if somewhat predictable – conclusion in its final episode.

The ending of My Demon has a touch of inevitability about it, but at this point, after a very consistent Season 1, I’d say it earned that. After his big sacrifice in Episode 15, it will come as a surprise to nobody that Gu-won returns in Episode 16 and that he and Do-hee end up together. However, everyone who has invested in the relationship thus far wouldn’t have wanted anything else.

Of course, the finale finds Do-hee devastated about Gu-won’s apparent sacrifice. She stops taking care of herself, contemplates suicide, and is eventually hospitalized. After a while, she decides to try getting on with things, but still pines for her lost love, visiting the spots they used to and wishing for him to return.

Does Gu-won return?

Yes, of course Gu-won returns. Do-hee’s wish is granted. They have God to thank for all of this, since she lost a bet to Gu-won and was feeling generous. There’s a case to be made that this is perhaps a little too easy of a solution to Gu-won’s return, but it had to happen one way or another, so this is what we got.

Reunited, Gu-won and Do-hee are able to get into the Christmas spirit, however there are still some matters left unaddressed between the two of them. For one thing, there’s the lingering matter of the deal Gu-won made with Do-hee’s father. This, he explains, was her father saving the lives of Do-hee’s pregnant mother and her following an accident.

Gu-won kept this to himself so at not to confuse Do-hee or make her miserable. With that roadblock finally surmounted, the two kiss.

What happens to Suk-min?

Suk-min is arrested following the previous episode, although he was thrilled about having gotten his way by destroying Do-hee and Gu-won. Later, Do-hee goes to visit him in prison to tell him that Gu-won has returned. The only thing Suk-min destroyed was himself.

Suk-min is driven literally mad by this news, agitated and screaming. When he returns to his cell, he sees visions of his mother and screams further still.

What happens with Se-ra and Ga-young?

Se-ra doesn’t have the happiest of endings, but it’s a meaningful one. After being reminded of how her son loved her and tried to protect her from his father’s abuse, and she ultimately failed to protect him from it, she refuses to run away from the matter any longer and decides to open a shelter for the benefit of children suffering from domestic violence.

Ga-young decides to leave for England, but on her way encounters a young girl who is being abused just as she was as a youngster. Like Se-ra, she refuses to turn the other cheek and remains in Korea after reporting the father to the police, embracing responsibility for the child.

How does My Demon Season 1 end?

After a four-month time skip, Gu-won is working hard at collecting souls, but is still choosy about whose he takes. Seok-hoon is appointed the CEO of Mirae Group, and Do-hee is happy to work under him.

Do-hee is also informed that Suk-min will never leave jail. The death sentence will be upheld and he will die in prison. She also learns that Madam Ju had late-stage cancer, which explains why she was in such a hurry for Do-hee to get hitched.

Do-hee and Gu-won end the series together. Yes, they bicker – nobody, after all, is really happily married – but they love each other deeply and refuse to focus on the fact that Gu-won’s lifespan is significantly longer than hers. They live in each moment together, happy and safe with one another.
