Ervil Lebaron is the subject of a shocking five-part true crime series on Hulu, Daughters of the Cult, that deals with a Mormon cult and the astonishing crimes that were committed by LeBaron and his followers. Known as “The Mormon Manson” he would be linked to over thirty murders, and continue to propagate the abuse of girls and women through his belief in polygamy. Ervil LeBaron is dead, having committed suicide in prison, but he leaves behind a legacy of horror.

How did Ervil LeBaron Die?

The Hulu series explains the horrifying chain of events that occurred, and eventually on June 1, 1979, Ervil LeBaron was captured by police in Mexico and taken to the United States, where he was convicted of having arranged the murder of Rulon C. Allred. In 1980, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Utah State Prison and that is where he died.

Ervil LeBaron was found dead on August 16th, 1981, and his death was considered to be suicide. Evril was behind a series of crimes and although he had been arrested before in 1974, his conviction was overturned and he was released. Many believe that this may have been due to a bribe.

How long was Ervil LeBaron in prison?

The cult leader was imprisoned for life but was found dead in his cell on August 16th, 1981. He had been imprisoned since his capture in June 1979, meaning that Ervil LeBaron spent a total of only two years behind bars.

How many children did Ervil LeBaron have?

Although it is not officially confirmed, it has been reported that LeBaron fathered over fifty children, as well as raising stepchildren. One of LeBaron’s children is Anna LeBaron, who managed to escape from the evil cult. She would go on to write about her horrifying experiences with the murderous cult leader in her book, The Polygamist’s Daughter: A Memoir. Anna was also consulted in the making of Daughters of the Cult.

How many wives did Ervil LeBaron have?

Ervil LeBaron had a total of thirteen wives. Several of them he had married when they were underage. Many of them were also involved in various murders that had been committed.

What did Ervil LeBaron write while in prison?

During his incarceration, Ervil LeBaron wrote what became known as The Book of the New Covenants. This included a commandment to kill disobedient church members who were named in a list written by LeBaron. Some 20 copies were printed and distributed and shockingly some of the people on the list would indeed be murdered.

Three of the murders were carried out at the same time on June 27, 1988. At 4:00 pm, Duane Chynoweth, one of LeBaron’s former followers, was shot and killed with his 8-year-old daughter, Jennifer, while running errands. Eddie Marston, one of LeBaron’s stepsons and former heavy, was killed in the same way, and Mark Chynoweth, a father of six, was shot while in his office in Houston, Texas.
