Summary
My Demon Episode 12 digs into Gu-won’s past and builds to probably the most significant cliffhanger of the season thus far.
No love story ever goes smoothly. There’s the getting-to-know-you phase, which is often a bit temperamental, and then the honeymoon period, which is overly sweet in a way that can never last, and then there’s the inevitable third-act breakup period. Episode 11 of My Demon Season 1 offered up a pretty good reason for some issues between Gu-won and Do-hee since it suggested he might have killed her in a past life. Episode 12 goes a step further by implying that he might have killed her parents in this one.
Let’s start with the past life business. Once upon a time, Gu-won was Yi-sun, a pampered human spoiled by his widower father who fell for a courtesan named Wol-sim. The stalking – sorry, playful obsession? – commenced, and eventually, she began to take to him a little.
The problem for Wol-sim is that she was jaded. As a courtesan, she had seen extremely healthy versions of relationships that had led to the death of her friend and her own relocation to the village as “punishment” for having her own say. She and Gu-won were from wildly different socioeconomic backgrounds, and it didn’t seem like a relationship between them could work.
How and why did Gu-won become a demon?
This turned out to be true, in a sense, but you have to blame Catholicism a little bit. To get around Wol-sim’s class-conscious demeanor, Yi-sun turned to Catholicism, the scripture of which considered everyone more or less equal (we don’t have time to quibble with this, but I know.) At the time, though, neighboring villages were under attack on the pretext of stamping out Catholicism, so Wol-sim, who had converted with Yi-sun, was offered as a Catholic scapegoat. She was killed, and in response, Yi-sun turned murderous and more importantly adamantly anti-Catholic. Even more severely, anti-God. So, with his outright refusal to go anywhere near heaven, he was consigned to roam the earth as a demon.
True to form, Do-hee doesn’t share Gu-won’s concerns about his murderous past and his potential threat to her in the long term. She’s happy to be with him and take the risk. Though it seems to be becoming increasingly risky, as we’ll see.
Do-yeong is no more, Suk-min isn’t going anywhere
Checking in on the villain contingent, Suk-min remains despicable. His coercive and manipulative ways have already scarred his wife, and his sister won’t be far behind with her children now being the sole heirs of the company. Do-yeong, meanwhile, commits suicide in jail after being diagnosed with a litany of mental health issues, all of which Suk-min asks Do-hee to keep quiet.
Do-hee isn’t stupid and knows Suk-min is up to something, perhaps something connected to the character Abraxas.
How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 12 end?
The end of My Demon Episode 12 implies that Gu-won might have been responsible for the deaths of Do-hee’s parents.
In a flashback, we see Madame Ju near the scene of the accident, and Gu-won is also present, brandishing a contract. Someone made a deal with a demon, and two souls were collected. Did Gu-won collect the souls of Do-hee’s parents? Who had signed on the dotted line?
Either way, it’s likely to become a serious issue in Gu-won and Do-hee’s burgeoning relationship.
