Summary

“Perestroika” is an action-packed finale that will surely appease fans of the series. The concluding chapter has it all — action, drama, tension, and real closure, whilst the sacrifices our main characters make lead to some powerful and emotive moments in this nail-biting finale.

For All Mankind concludes its fourth season with the feature-length finale, “Perestroika.” The Apple TV+ series ends on a high with the enthralling Episode 10, bringing a fitting conclusion to all of its interconnected storylines. The finale centers on the battle to place the Goldilocks asteroid in either Mars or Earth’s orbit, a battle that turns into an all-out war at Happy Valley in this jam-packed concluding chapter.

The finale begins two months earlier with astronaut Tuttle finding a gun buried in the Martian desert. Tuttle decides to keep the gun for himself, hiding it back at the base — a decision that will become a key component in the Season 4 finale.

Back in the present though, Dev and his team are preparing for their sabotage mission, hoping to keep the Goldilocks asteroid in Mars’ orbit. Danielle’s team plans to push the asteroid into Earth’s orbit instead. Dev watches Danielle at work, relaying messages back to his crew via Morse Code.

It’s revealed that Lee hasn’t killed Cho, but that Cho is unconscious and tied up instead. Dev’s team argues whether to kill the man or to take him to the medical bay. Ed orders Cho to be saved and taken to the medics immediately, a decision that may come back to haunt them in the future.

How is Miles tortured?

Meanwhile, Miles is tortured by the spies Timur and Mike. They increase the CO2 levels in the room, causing Miles to vomit. He still refuses to comply though. Next, Danielle orders a mandatory curfew for all non-essential Helios workers, and for further raids of their quarters. They need to find the traitors right away. A security guard finds Tuttle’s gun during one of these raids and he too keeps the weapon a secret.

Mike changes tactics and threatens Miles’ wife and family instead. He states that Miles’ wife will face a 5-year prison sentence for her involvement in Miles’ black-market ventures and that their kids will be subsequently taken away from them. Miles breaks at this point, finally giving up Dev’s team’s location.

Dev watches as Mike and his team march towards the elevators, to head to the lower levels. He quickly warns his team, sending a mayday message. His team flees the hideout, moving to the North Korean’s quarters before they are spotted. Dev regroups with his team there, accepting that the mission has failed.

Back on Earth, Irina shows up at NASA to oversee the asteroid capture mission in person. She’s also there to keep a beady eye on Margo. Aleida goes looking for Sergei after his radio silence and is horrified to discover that he is dead. She tells Margo the awful news. Margo confronts Irina about this death right away, and she just about stops herself from flat-out accusing her boss of murder.

Eli and Irina are informed of the sabotage attempt. They seemingly don’t have time for Margo’s antics. NASA quickly regains control of the Ranger, which then begins to move the asteroid towards Earth’s orbit. Danielle and her team celebrate this monumental moment in space history.

How does Dev’s team plan to control the Ranger?

While the asteroid is moved, Dev and his team brainstorm new ideas. They plan their next move, making contact with Sam via one of Lee’s colleagues. Sam is given new directions by Dev, who talks her through their plan. She is to turn the override switch and give control of the engines back to Dev in the process. This means engaging in a spacewalk during all of this chaos though.

Danielle is updated about the saboteurs hiding out in the North Korean quarters. She tries to bargain with Ed, but neither rival is ready to back down now though. Ed sees Mars as his home and Danielle is still loyal to Earth. Both sides have their reasons for placing the asteroid in Mars or Earth’s orbit and both sides are willing to fight tooth and nail to win this war, leading to a tense final third.

Sam keeps the override switch in place with her tether. Meanwhile, Palmer is sent to stop Sam and her plan. These two end up fighting out in space. Palmer pushes Sam out of the way and begins to cut the tether, although Sam pulls Palmer away at the very last second.

At the very same time, Aleida and Margo agree to sabotage NASA’s plans on Earth. They choose to side with Dev and Ed, they too want the asteroid to stay in Mars’ orbit, to keep the Mars mission fully funded. Aleida writes an input code that stops NASA from cutting Ranger’s engines.

Is the Goldilocks asteroid kept in Mars’ orbit?

Both of these separate battles end in Dev’s favor. Dev and his team celebrate as the asteroid is kept in Mars’ orbit. Irina immediately accuses Aleida of sabotage, but Margo sacrifices herself instead, taking the blame. Margo is then arrested by the FBI and taken away. Her diplomatic immunity will not save her anymore. Aleida hugs Margo one last time as she is escorted out of NASA’s headquarters.

NASA gives Mike and his security team the green light to fight dirty back at Happy Valley. They arm themselves and head for the North Koreans’ quarters. Danielle attempts to call off this attack, but Mike is receiving his orders from higher up, he won’t be deterred. Meanwhile, Ilya and the gang free Miles and his colleague from the torture chamber.

How does For All Mankind Season 4 end?

Mike’s team line the Korean’s hatch door with explosives and begin their attack. Miles rallies the Helios workers and they fight back also. Ed and Danielle watch in horror as a battle commences outside the Koreans’ quarters.

The security guard from earlier takes out his gun and is immediately wrestled for it. He fights to keep control of the weapon and accidentally fires it. The shot hits Danielle in the fray. Ed rushes her over to the medic bay. This one gunshot ends the feud, the battle is now officially over. All the fighters watch in stunned disbelief as Danielle is operated on.

What happens in 2012?

The series then fast-forwards to 2012. Irina is investigated back in Russia. News of the riots and the torture of detainees on Mars is leaked to the press. Lee is reunited with his wife at Happy Valley. Danielle returns to Earth alive and well, where she is greeted by her family and grandchild.

“Perestroika” ends back on Mars though. We see Dev exploring a crater at the very top of the Red Planet. Then as the camera zooms out, we see mining has begun on the Goldilocks asteroid.
