Summary

My Demon reaches the obligatory break-up part of the story, though at least its central relationship remains admirably complex.

Episode 13 of My Demon wasted far too much time on very light-hearted rom-com theatrics, so it stands to reason that Episode 14 is the dreaded but inevitable break-up episode. Revelations have been mounting up throughout Season 1 and many have threatened to upset the applecart for Gu-won and Do-hee. After the previous episode’s cliffhanger ending, it was only a matter of time.

What happened to Do-hee’s parents?

Speaking of that cliffhanger, let’s clarify. So, Madam Ju hadn’t made a deal with Gu-won to claim the souls of Do-hee’s parents, though as we’ve seen in previous flashbacks, both were indeed present at the accident that killed them.

At the time Madam Ju was a lot more unscrupulous and was willing to make business decisions that imperiled workers’ lives. Do-hee’s father was dead against this and planned to expose it, just as the audio suggested. But their car crashed. Do-hee’s mother was killed in the accident and her father had a heart attack shortly after. Gu-won was there to collect Do-hee’s father’s soul after a deal he made a decade prior. Madam Ju saw it all, saw the Devil in the flesh, and renounced her morally dubious ways.

Is Suk-min really dead?

Technically, Suk-min dies in Episode 14. He commits suicide after his wife turns rat and his misdeeds are exposed, however, there’s a point made that his body hasn’t been recovered, and we all know what that means.

Answers on a postcard for how we think Suk-min has managed to survive this, though no bonus points for assuming it’s something to do with the demon manual since that’s fairly obvious at this point.

Suk-min mentions his desire to go to Hell. Of course, Gu-won is depicted in many instances as the devil in this arrangement, and his Fatherly counterpart here is who Do-hee goes to for information about Madam Ju and the accident. Gu-won’s demonic occupation is becoming increasingly difficult for Do-hee to grapple with.

The dreaded break-up

In light of recent revelations, Do-hee is struggling. Madam Ju was once an unscrupulous careerist; her father made a deal with a demon, and that demon is now her husband. The close relationship between Gu-won’s profession and her father’s death is a little much for Do-hee to deal with and causes major friction in the relationship.

I do appreciate how My Demon resists the urge to oversimplify these feelings, on both sides. It isn’t a matter of petty disagreements, but fundamental personal crises. Do-hee has to reconcile her husband’s close relationship with death and how the deaths of those closest to her have affected her so profoundly in her life. Gu-won has to reckon with the idea that, after losing Do-hee in a past life because of his faith, he stands to lose her again because he rejected God and embraced the demonic.

How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 14 end?

There is, really, only one way that Episode 14 can end, which is with Gu-won deciding to selflessly break up with Do-hee so that he doesn’t drag her down with him. He’s feeling very guilty at this point.

I, for one, don’t believe for a second that this will stick, but it’s a mandatory part of the romantic K-Drama arc, so we can deal with it. I also strongly suspect Suk-min will return to the fore as the villain in the next two episodes, so look out for that.
