Summary
Death and Other Details starts strong with a well-calculated episode giving us a lay of the land for the remainder of the season.
Death and Other Details kicks off in Episode 1, “Rare”, with us meeting the pertinent people while a murder takes place aboard a cruise ship. With plenty of moving pieces on the vessel, the narrator reminds us several times: “Pay Attention. Details matter.” Season 1 gets off to a calculated start here by giving us a good indication of what’s to come on the voyage ahead.
Keith Trubitsy was sitting at the bar on this lavish ship when a waitstaff member accidentally spilled water over his expensive watch. Imogene was watching in the distance as Keith was yelling in the face of the woman. She takes matters into her own hands and talks to Keith about how he treated the woman. He doesn’t care, but Imogene takes his room key from his wallet as he yaps.
Who dies in Episode 1, “Rare?”
Later that night, Imogene sneaks into Keith’s room while he is sleeping to smash the watch. The following morning, room service comes in to clean his room, and when she turns around, we see Keith dead as he is pinned to the wall by a pipe.
The series rewinds two days earlier when Imogene gets on the ship with her brother and sister-in-law. We get a lay of the land with us finding out this is Lawrence Collier’s ship, and everyone on board has something to do with him. As Imogene roams the ship, she runs into Rufus Cotesworth (we met him earlier in a flashback where he worked the case of her mother’s passing) and wants to know why he is on the ship, but customer service refuses to explain why.
Who was Rufus Cotesworth hired by?
Imogene heads to break the news to Leila that Rufus Cotesworth is on the ship, leading to Leila telling her family the news. It’s revealed that the Chun family has hired Cotesworth as an intimidation tactic against the Colliers.
The following morning, Jules (security guard) gets a knock at the door, and is told that Keith has been murdered. The waitstaff is being summoned with the announcement of the murder, and they are told that Rufus Cotesworth will be heading the investigation and not to inform anyone on the ship of the murder.

Although she headed to see the security footage, Imogene realized that the footage from that night was missing. On top of that, her return to her cabin reveals Rufus is waiting for her, and the two share a war of words. Her refusal to work with Rufus ends as he reveals the only footage of anyone going into the room was of her.
How does Death and Other Details Season 1 Episode 1 end?
Before Rufus and Imogene begin working together, Imogene confronts him about why he quit on finding out who murdered her mother. He explains it’s not as simple as that and reveals he believes they were brought back on this ship together for a reason. When pressed to disclose why, Rufus said he was trying to assemble the final pieces.
Who was Keith Trubitsy working for?
We get a montage of Imogene as a little girl overhearing Rufus telling her father who might’ve killed her mother. Moments later, Rufus is leaving their house, saying he isn’t working the case anymore, and this is where we see Keith Trubitsy sitting in Rufus’s care because he was his assistant.
Present-day Imogene asks Rufus what case he was working on the ship, and he says, “I think you know.”
