Summary
This episode introduces viewers to some of the more serious dynamics of the dungeon while still maintaining its lighthearted, entertaining tone.
Episode 3 of Delicious in Dungeon proved it’s about more than just learning new recipes as Laios solved the mystery behind Living Armor. Now, in Episode 4, his party continues to roam the dungeon in search of Falin and the dragon that consumed her. The deeper they go, the more dangerous their surroundings seem, but luckily, Laios picked up an interesting partner along with his new sword. Here’s hoping whatever this new partner is, they’re useful as the party travels further throughout Season 1.
The episode opens with the party making it to the Golden Castle. They hear a variety of footsteps, which Laios is easily able to distinguish by sound. He tries to steer them clear of some nearby Golems, but Senshi insists on gathering supplies from them.
Senshi shows the group his base camp on the third floor of the dungeon and explains that he usually plants crops on the bodies of the Golems because their soil is better. After taking down a few, the party harvests a variety of crops.
While wondering why Senshi prefers to live in the dungeon, Laios’ party learns that Senshi is the one who maintains the third floor as well. Not only does he grow crops and deal with monsters, but he cleans the bathrooms.
On their way through the dungeon, the party takes their leftover vegetables in hopes of trading with them. While attempting to make a deal with an innkeeper, the inn is attacked by Orcs.
Laios’s party prepares to fight back, but Senshi stops them, as he seems to have a relationship with the Orcs and reveals they are usually the ones who buy his vegetables.
The Orcs tell Senshi and Laios that they have seen the Red Dragon they are looking for, as it has recently been wreaking havoc on their village.
What does Senshi trade the Orcs for his vegetables?
When the Orcs try to steal their crops, Senshi asks that they make a trade instead. In exchange for the vegetables, Senshi asks the Orcs if he and his friends can spend one night with them.
Using several of the ingredients the Orcs pillaged, Senshi sets out to make bread. As he does, the lead Orc tells his son how they once lived on the surface before being murdered and run out by humans, elves, and other species. Marcille argues that the Orcs were murderers, leading the two to argue as they knead bread.
How does Delicious in Dungeon Season 1 Episode 4 end?
When the bread is finished, the Orc attempts to take it for his people, but his son asks why they cannot all eat together. After some resistance, the Orc allows Laios’ party to cook a full meal for everyone in their compound.
Laios promises the Orc if he tells him the location of the Red Dragon, they will kill it without harming his village. The Orc agrees and gives him a map before eventually letting them go.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this series at first, but each week, Delicious in Dungeon gets a little more interesting and proves it’s not just a show about flashy recipes.
Episode 4 introduced viewers to the less desirable side of dungeon politics with the Orcs, and it was nice to see serious conflicts in this world. This could’ve easily been a surface-level show about cooking, but it’s clear that much effort also went into the worldbuilding. The way this series manages to blend cooking into each episode’s broader lesson is a testament to that.
Although this series is fun and comedic most of the time, it slowly introduces more serious elements and proves to be a more well-rounded fantasy series than the name might suggest. I’m sure things will only improve as we’re slowly introduced to more of the monsters from the dungeon, especially through the eyes of a character like Senshi.
