Summary

Protecting an immature asset leads to new conflicts between John and Jane. Hihi isn’t helping the situation, as they’re starting to favor Jane over her partner.

Cracks start to appear in the relationship between John and Jane in Episode 5, especially as the two seem to disagree on some key values. The mission has them traveling around Lake Como, where they must protect a 50-something man who acts like a toddler. While Ron Perlman is great in his episodic appearance, the Toby character is unbearable to watch and not particularly funny. This is probably the strangest and most awkward episode of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 thus far.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

This episode starts in the picturesque Lake Como, Italy, area, where our two favorite spies have to kidnap Toby, a high-value asset, and take him to a designated safe house. Toby isn’t particularly keen about being taken against his will and even goes as far as to fake a heart attack to convince Jane to remove his hood.

When they arrive at the safe house, the trio must drive away immediately as a group of masked assassins are already waiting for them. A high-speed car chase ends in the middle of a quaint and busy village. John, Jane, and Toby eventually run for it on foot. Toby’s lack of fitness makes the chase a bit more complicated. But John and Jane pay off a boat owner to get them to the other side of the lake.

On the other side of the lake, the trio enters a house, and Jane is shocked to see John knew the entry code. She’s shocked to learn that he bought the house on a whim several days prior. Even Toby doesn’t think impulse buying property was the best idea John ever had.

Is Hihi trying to break Jane and John up?

Jane texts Hihi with an update, and the supervisor wants to know if she’s happy. Hihi then praises Jane for her recent work and implies the Company would like her to advance without John. As for Toby, the Smiths must keep him alive until the morning when Hihi can arrange transport. When Jane receives her coordinates from Hihi, she admits to not always seeing eye to eye with John.

Throughout the episode, the pair develop a strange parental relationship with Toby. Over dinner, Toby tells a terrible Hitler joke that even gets a smile out of John. Things turn a bit sour when Toby has a meltdown over wanting cigarettes, and John threatens him with a gun.

The tension between John and Jane dissipates when they share a touching moment on their porch. John vows never to kill Jane, which is the peak of romance for these two. Of course, John then ruins the moment by saying he wants to “put a baby in” Jane. And then they’re interrupted by Toby, who had a little puking accident.

Who blew up John’s lakeside cottage?

The following morning, the trio rushes out of the cottage when Jane notices the assassins have found them. Before their chasers can shoot at them, the cottage blows up, killing the masked men. On the boat ride, Jane admits she left explosives inside the stove.

How does Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 5 end?

After Toby is safely on his getaway plane, John and Jane go back to their hotel room to argue. John asks his partner if she’s pregnant and admits to feeling disappointed she’s not. While he would like a family and maybe move to low-risk work, Jane finds the prospect daunting. Things get even more heated when the pair receives a package from Hihi containing a fancy wine bottle with a note congratulating only Jane for how she handled the mission.

Alone with a glass of wine, Jane asks Hihi if they “expect’’ her to have a child. Hihi gives Jane some encouragement before offering to move her up a level. They even ask if she wants to replace her John, and it seems Jane is considering her options.
